Peruvian chicken exports on the rise, especially in Japan

(LIP-wb) -- Peruvian chicken is a rather insignificant product representing only a small fraction of Peru's general exports. But since Peruvian chicken products entered the Japanese market in November 2005, export orders have skyrocketed.

Peru's Exporters Association (ADEX) informed that in 2006, total shipments increased to more than US$ 284k, which is 1785 % more than in 2005 when only US$ 15k were shipped abroad.

The Japanese market opened to the favorite bird on Peruvian dinner tables as soon as the Direction for Commercial Promotion of the Peruvian Foreign Ministry, with support of a group of private companies, finalized proceedings that allowed raising sanitary restrictions which previously prevented exports to that country. The process lasted more than four years.

ADEX explained that frozen consumable meat pieces from hens and roosters registered the highest increase with sales valued at US$ 270,461, concentrating 95% of the total. Frozen whole chickens followed with US$ 10,212 (4% of the total).

Favorable exportable chicken parts are legs, wings, shoulders, fillets and breasts but also giblets.

Destinations

ADEX detailed the main buyer of Peruvian chicken is Japan with purchases reaching US$ 268,663, represented 94% of the total, followed by International Waters (consumption on boats) and Hungary, where a sample of Peruvian chicken was sent last October.

Peru's main exporting companies are lead by San Fernando S.A., represented 94% of total exports. Other Peruvian companies are Rasan S.A., Takehara S.A., Polaris E.I.R.L., Multiservicios Albatros S.A.C., Reinas Del Pacifico S.A.C., Corporación Marítima Apollo SR Ltda., Logistic Services Morcas S.A.C. and Araucaria S.A.C.

The main Peruvian region for chicken production is Ica with US$ 146k (51% of total exports), followed by Lima (US$ 124k / 44%) and Callao (US$ 14k / 5%).
