Peru spotlight: Eating trends in the U.S consumer

AmCham PeruInfo provided and translated by the
American Chamber of Commerce of Peru (AmCham Peru)

Some weeks ago, AmCham Peru organized a business mission in the context of one of the most important events in the food sector in the United States, one that reunites 5 trade fairs. This initiative gave us the opportunity to know more about the U.S. food market, which has enabled us to share some new info about the current trends.

After almost 10 years of poor eating habits, American are starting to notice the negative consequences poor habits have on their health. It is estimated that at least 4 out of 10 American consumers are opting for eating smaller and low fat portions. Many experts suggest that this is explained because of the rejection to the obesity problems that have appeared in recent years in the United States and also because of the discontent with the modern “fast result” diets that do not work as expected in the end. Thus, people have realized that with some minor and simple changes to their daily diets, they can loose weight more effectively than by using pills or going to the plastic surgeon.

Hence, the consumption of grains and cereals is increasing. Recent studies reveal that nearly half of the American consumers would buy food products made with a content of 100% grains or low fat ingredients.

It it also observed that consumers from both sexes have made healthy changes in their diet, although women are the ones who have changed the most. Given that women have more responsability in their households, they are more aware of the food they buy and the nutrients within them. Thus, women tend to read food nutritional labels and also tend to have more conversations about how healthy a meal is. Hence, if you are looking forward to reach to that market segment –the fastest growing one in the food market-, a good strategy would be to focus on all mothers who base their lifestyles in health factor.

Then, mission -like the one realized by AmCham Peru in Chicago- allow companies to get closer to market reality and extract valuable information. Thus, the Chamber fully supports these kinds of initiatives and hopes to get the attention of a significant number of companies from the handcrafts sector for the mission that AmCham’s TradeCenter is already organizing for the New York Gift Show, the most important trade fair of gifts and decorative items in the Unites States.
