The mission of a Toastmasters Club is to provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every member has the opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth. Every club is part of Toastmasters International, whose mission is to make effective oral communication a worldwide reality. Toastmasters teaches one to listen, to think, and to speak effectively. The ideal is to create better communicators and so we constantly strive for this in our meetings. The idea started back in 1924 in California by Dr. Ralph C. Smedley, and today we have over 2,000,000 members and over 100,000 clubs, with new clubs beings installed every month all over the world.

The beauty of this program is to learn how to improve ourselves, and all we have to do is follow the literature we receive when we become members. At first you may come as a visitor for three times, and then at the fourth you must decide if this is what you were looking for or not. Most people who come to our Club decide to stay, as we are a happy, healthy group that is willing to share all our knowledge with newcomers.
This, perhaps, is one of the characteristics of Toastmasters, that there are no teachers. We all learn from each other and we all mentor and coach the newcomer.
Here in Peru Toastmasters is, in addition, an important instrument to become fluent in the English Language, as it is of utmost importance today to be able to communicate well in English. All conferences and newest books on inventions or new ideas are in this language. The Club is not a school to learn English, one has to have a certain level of command of English, but there you have an opportunity to polish the language and increase your vocabulary. You will be coached constantly by those with more experience, and all your presentations are evaluated. Not criticized, but rather weighed with the innate abilities the speaker has and what other aspects need bettering or change.
Toastmasters also helps you become a better leader by asking for your participation in the different roles that we have in all our meetings. This participation and willingness to take part in the running of the meeting will give you tools to better your leadership skills. The Toastmasters approach is hands-on and participatory, not dry and academic; it’s a place to try your hand at leadership instead of just reading about it.
There are two English Toastmasters Club, both meeting on Thursday. The Lima Toastmasters Club meets at 12:30 to 2:00 PM for lunch at The Lima Cricket & Football Club, while The International Toastmasters Club of Peru meets at 469 Grimaldo del Solar 469, Miraflores, on Thursday evenings from 7:30 to 9:00 PM.
Come on down and join us. It will be a challenge you will always be proud of having taken.
