Las Romerísimas: A Review

While sipping my glass of wine in the large but intimate back room of Barranco’s Antica Pizzeria, I silently mused about an event I knew nothing about. Would I enjoy listening to old latino music that I had certainly never heard before? Would the music be any good? And the performers, would they really measure up?

Needless to say, I was more than sure I was not going to enjoy the show. I mean, I was easily the youngest person in the room, and I can guarantee you, I was the only one who didn’t know the words to the songs.

But, from the very first song, I fell in love with the show. The crazy outfits, the over-the-top makeup, and the animation of the band and the backup singer, were the perfect accents to a duo that could not be easily forgotten. Elena and Bárbara are the perfect show-girls. They know how to entertain. With their witty jokes and their casual interactions with the audience, one sees that they are at home up on stage. And they deserve to be. Their beautiful, strong and clear voices resounded through the restaurant, and spread excitement, joy and animation to the crowd.

With just the first refrain, las Romerísimas had everyone singing along (except me, of course). The excitement was contagious. Wives sang to their husbands, friends danced in the back of the room (no one dared to join the sisters on the stage, despite their many invitations), and smiles filled the faces of everyone in the room, including me.

The songs, like the title of the event states, made everyone travel through time. Music from the 80s and the 60s dominated, like “La Gata Bajo la Lluvia,” and everyone sang along to every song they presented. Ranging from sweet ballads to defiant, peppy songs like “Chica Ye Ye,” the night was extremely entertaining.

The sisters left nothing to be desired. Their singing was first-class; their dancing was a bit choreographed, yet improvisational; and their charisma ruled the show. The restaurant was the perfect venue for this show. We could watch the show accompanied by pizza and wine. The pizza we ordered, Proscuitto, was excellent. I was amazed by the amount of flavor in such little meat. The salty flavor of the ham was the perfect combination with the mild mozzarella. And the crust was crispy, just the way I like it. The two of us split a personal sized pizza, and to be honest, at that time of night, I wouldn’t want much more to eat.

I left the event smiling, laughing and so glad that I went. I was amazed that a “gringa” like me, who knew nothing of the songs, had so much fun. I would highly recommend this event; I guarantee you that you will have a great time, even if you have never listened to this type of latino music. Some knowledge of Spanish will help you enjoy the event even more, but you certainly don't need to be an expert to enjoy this fun-filled show!
