Walter Raffo, LivinginPeru’s independent security consultant, brings us all a reminder in his monthly safety column: be prepared in case of a fire emergency. Here are a few of his tips to keep in mind while traveling. However, as we all know, these suggestions can be applied to any situation.

Despite the reduction in the chance of a fire emergency due to advances in construction technology, more practical designs, the furnishing of modern buildings with fire retardant materials, improved fire fighting techniques as well as detection systems, fires may occur in any location, particularly in lodging facilities where the possibility of careless behavior or defective material can result in an open fire.
To that extent, as I have written in previous articles, we must be prepared and pay attention to simple details, many of which I will detail below.
Upon registering in a hotel and in your way to your room you may look for:
• Fire cabinets (hoses and axes)
• Fire extinguishers (please memorize its location)
• Smoke detectors
• Layouts indicating the escape routes (mostly posted on the walls in corridors)
Once in your room, please read and take note of all safety information that is provided. This information is usually posted behind the main entrance door to the room.
If you have never been instructed in how to use a fire extinguisher, find the nearest one in the area, and carefully read the instructions on how to use it.
Walk the closest escape route from your room to the closest stairwell or outside as a practice.
If a fire starts in your room or floor:
• Make a quick assessment of the situation
• Take the closest fire extinguisher to put out the fire
• Use a manual alarm o pass the word loudly, but with a calm voice
• Use the fire hose if necessary and ask for help.
If the hotel fire alarm system goes off, this indicates that the evacuation of the facility must begin. You should:
• Head to the closest escape route
• Walk quickly, but calmly
• Do not enter the building at any point
• Keep walking until you reach an outside, open area
• NEVER use the elevators
If for any reason your clothes catch fire:
• Roll back and forth on the floor until the flames are put out
• Ask someone else to smother the flames on you with a thick large blanket or item of clothing
• Get under a shower or inside a swimming pool
But as always, prevention is the name of the game!
