Dog Fight

We’re having a dog fight in Barranco. Let me explain. It’s not what you think.

The area where I live in Barranco is changing. Where there were individual dwellings, now apartment buildings are sprouting up all over. The natural consequence of this, is that more people are living in our neighborhood.

With that comes something else--- we have lots more dogs.


You see them on the streets, walking in the park, everywhere.  Mostly they are being walked by the maids employed by the families living in the new apartments. With the increase in the dog population, however, come more noise and more doggie deposits on the streets and in the parks.

Well, as they say, for every action, there is a reaction. As a result of the increase in the dog population, we’ve also seen an increase in the conflict between dog lovers and the anti-dog crowd. The Alcalde (Mayor) of Barranco has been bombarded with many complaints from our district about dogs barking and the excessive amount of dog doo. So much so that he finally scheduled a street meeting for the neighborhood. He wanted to take some of the emotion out of the situation and allow some people to let off steam.

Billed as an opportunity for the anti-dog faction to air their complaints, it ended anti-climatically when the leader of the dog protesters failed to appear at the meeting even though it was held right in front of her house. Her followers remained silent, and at the meeting we all took the opportunity to complain about other things to the Mayor.

Nevertheless, I understand that there is discontent in the neighborhood concerning dogs, and I have tried to make sure that my two do not contribute to the problem. I have told our two Old English Sheepdogs, Ariel and Falcon, to cut out any unnecessary barking. They have nodded their agreement.

Also I am very careful to clean up after them when we take our walks in the neighborhood. If all the dog owners followed this practice, I think we would reduce the discontent significantly.

But the best move I’ve made is bringing back our wonderful dog trainer, Miguel Angel, to polish up their manners. They are now models of good behavior.

Miguel Angel has something special as far as the dogs are concerned, and I’ve often wondered what it is. Is it body language, smell, or do they just sense that he is a good person? He is.

Whatever he has, our dogs respond to him with total devotion. They walk quietly by his side, they behave well when other dogs are around, and they do all sorts of neat tricks with him. He is quiet, calm and never seems to show any impatience or irritation at the behavior of the dogs. I once asked him if he thought his methods might also work well on children. He just smiled.

With the construction of several very large new apartment buildings in our neighborhood, it is clear that the population of people and dogs will continue to increase.

So I guess the dog fight isn’t over, yet.

Hello to all,

I did not look at the date of your post, I hope it was current.

I have plans to moving to Peru with my two dogs.

In general, if you are a responsible pet owner, I Peru Dog Friendly?

Any problems in coming , with the dogs.  Quarantines?

What is best Forumn?

HI EVERYBODY!!

I LIVE IN BARRANCO , AND I THINK WE HAVE TO DO SOMETHING TO STOP THE POPULATION OF DOGS. BECAUSE IT'S NOT ONLY THE PROBLEM  PEOPLE LIVING WITH DOGS, THE REAL PROBLEM IS THERE ARE MANY DOGS LIVING IN THE STREETS , FEMALE DOGS AND THEY HAVE  PUPPIES IN MANY PLACES.
I THINK IF THE MAYOR DOESN'T WANT MORE DOGS , HE HAS TO START A CAMPAIGN TO STERILIZE FEMALES . I AM SURE THAT MANY PEOPLE WANTS THAT FOR THEIR DOGS.

SERIOUSLY, IT IS TIME TO DO TO RESPECT RIGHTS OF ANIMALS!!!
