The Magical Water Park in Lima: A photo essay

LivinginPeru.com

Naming a park "magical" is ambitious, but Lima's El Circuito Mágico del Agua delivers. Thirteen colorful and vibrant fountains make a fantasy world within Parque de la Reserva where kids play and couples get married. Brenden Allen, Australian photographer and LivinginPeru.com contributor, sent in this photo essay. (See Allen's website here and a recent article on an Amazon River trip.)

Allen writes: "The laughter mixed with the relaxed ambiance of the place stays with you a while, even through a bone-shattering combi-bus ride back to Barranco."

Enjoy these photographs, and take a visit to the park soon.

El Circuito Mágico del Agua
Parque de la Reserva
between Av. Arequipa and Paseo de la República,
around cdra. 4 of Arequipa.
Open 4-10 p.m., Wednesday-Sunday and holidays

Four parks you need to visit in Lima

Text and photos by Rodney L. Dodig

In all of my travels, Lima has some of the most beautiful parks for a city its size. These sometimes quiet, sometimes noisy places, refuges from the hectic pace of city life, satisfy a basic human need to interact with nature. Parks can be enormous in size like Central Park in New York City or as small as a grassy area with a tree and couple of benches. Lima has both and everything in between.

I am going to feature four of the magnificent parks here in Lima — along the Malecón, the water park, Exposición and Olivar —in the hopes that those of you who read this article will take the time to visit one or more whether you live here or are visiting.

How to embrace Barranco's humid, sluggish summer

By Larry J. Pitman
How to embrace Barranco's humid, sluggish summer
Honolulu: just like Barranco, right?

Here’s a riddle:

What do Barranco and Hawaii have in common?

Most people would say nothing or very little. But having lived in both places I can tell you that summer time in Barranco always brings memories of my time in Honolulu.

Why is that?

It certainly has a lot to do with the ocean. In both places the ocean is a big presence.

Most of my walks with my dogs in Barranco feature an ocean view while in Hawaii the sea is everywhere you look.

Take a historical tour of Peru's powerful: Barrios Altos cemetery

I recently had the opportunity to tour the Presbítero Matias Maestro Cemetery in Barrios Altos with Frida Galdos Rubatto. She is a genealogist here in Lima with an extensive knowledge of the cemetery and the people — wealthy, common, famous and infamous — interned there.  She also arranged for us to have special permission to take photographs inside the cemetery. She has lectured at several Universities on her work and she knows this cemetery like the back of her hand.

The cemetery has more than 700 neo-classical mausoleums and marble statuary that rivals the well known works in Italy and Greece. The detail on some of the statues is just incredible.

Peru to compete at 2010 Winter Olympics! Interview with skier Roberto Carcelen

By Ben Jonjak

http://filer.livinginperu.com/00Peru to compete at 2010 Winter Olympics!
Roberto Carcelen, ready to compete in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
Peruvian Roberto Carcelen is set to compete at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver in a sport many of his countrymen have probably never heard of. But although cross-country skiing isn't known in South America, in some parts of the world it's more popular than futbol.

We recently caught up with Roberto to ask him a few questions about his recent success in this sport from the Northern Hemisphere.

How many other Peruvians are participating in the 2010 Winter Olympics? Although interest is always high in Peru on the summer Olympics, I don't believe they have even broadcast the winter Olympics in the past. Perhaps you will give them reason to do so this year.

So, far I'm the only one who has met the qualification criteria and therefore got a spot in the Olympics. As a matter of fact, I'm the first Peruvian ever to qualify to the Winter Olympics.

Yeah, I don't remember watching the Winter Olympics on TV while living in Peru. I hope the fact of Peru going to a Winter Olympic would attract more people's interest in knowing about winter sports.

What is your athletic background and how did you get involved with cross-country skiing?

I grew up surfing, lots of surfing and running too. But surfing was my main thing and I did pretty well at national surfing contests (back in the ’90s).

The Best Gift: Memories of a Christmas Past

By Larry J. Pitman

The Best Gift: Memories of a Christmas PastChristmas time. Here in Peru we’ll be hosting a traditional Christmas Eve family celebration. I’m looking forward to that, but my thoughts keep coming back to another Christmas many years ago.

I hadn’t been home to California for almost nine months because I was in Washington, D.C., in graduate school. While I was gone, my father had retired. So I came home for Christmas that year to find that a once vigorous and healthy man had seriously deteriorated. He was dull, lifeless and starting to have major health problems.

After leaving his job, he had spent his time doing repairs in the house, and whatever else he could think of. That took a few months. Then he had nothing to do.

I could see that he was bored and restless. Unfortunately, he had no idea what to do to get back on track. Right then, I realized that if something wasn’t done soon, we were going to lose him.

But what to do? I decided to take a risk and buy him a dog.
