Destination Los Organos

Alejandra Llosa - WWW.PACIFICOADVENTURES.COM
At first, the long narrow desert strip that constitutes the Peruvian coast might strike the untrained eye as an inhospitable, harsh and forgotten destination where days seem to follow each other with stubborn inertia. Yet, despite this beguiling surliness, truth is that nothing can be as far removed from reality as these misconceptions. As in fact, the Peruvian coast boasts a great variety of unspoilt beaches, an extremely rich diversity of marine fauna, an inspiring past and living culture, and an amazing cuisine; all contained within the joyous, hospitable and contagious laid-back character of its inhabitants.

It is amongst these many hidden secrets that we come across Los Organos Beach, a small low-key gem of a destination, located on the northern border of Piura, and just a 15 minute drive away from popular surfing hub, Mancora Beach. Easy to reach, (from Lima a 1h45min flight to Tumbes plus a 1.5h drive, or an 18hrs overnight bus ride), here those who dare to break the lines of mainstream tourism and abandon themselves to the subtle rewards of experiencing a location from its core, will find out that no matter how long they stay, coming back for seconds is the norm.

A beautiful small sandy beach, with clear blue waters and sun all year round, Los Organos has the capacity of catering to a wide array of travelers seeking a relaxing yet entertaining vacation at the sea. For surfers or those willing to give this sport at least a try, this might be a very attractive destination as when the swell hits this area it secures three left beach breaks that will certainly allow for a nice, exciting and satisfying surfing session.

But since not everybody’s idea of an unforgettable holiday ends on the waves, it is also possible to duck deeper and explore the reef hiding underneath, where green algae sway to the rhythm of the current and plenty of colorful species of fish and mollusks thrive in this unexploited habitat.    And for those wanting even more, it is also possible to navigate further into the horizon and reach specific spots where snorkeling is excellent.

However, if you are not so necessarily keen on adrenaline and underwater activities and would rather stay above the surface, fishing might be just what the doctor recommended.  Considering the abundance of marine life in this area, most likely, you won’t return back home empty handed. Please keep in mind the importance of respecting regulations that protect species and the environment such as minimum sizes of fish.

Something that can give a visit to Los Organos the ultimate twist is the fact that during the months of June to November it is common to see playful humpback whales breaching in energetic jumps that would make any mortal question if there ever was such a thing as gravity. Since these enormous mammals (12–17 meters (40–50 ft)) migrate to tropical and sub-tropical waters during their breeding season, they are often sided by their calves which although smaller, are still massive if compared to our limited physical expressions of humanity. Curious and friendly, humpback whales are acrobatic by nature and they show humps and tail fins in seemingly careless choreographies that bring us back to the awareness that there is always much more to life, and in this case, to Los Organos, than we can see.

So while watching the whales from the comfort of your lair is quite a treat, to surge the waters and have the chance to see them from up close, is just tantalizing, doable, and probably, the perfect closure to your Los Organos experience.
Choosing wisely

Every traveler knows that as promising as all these activities might sound, choosing the right tour operator can be quite a daunting experience, and as important  as the activity itself.

And in Los Organos, when it comes to sorting out the logistics of your chosen adventure, Pacifico Adventures, a local ecotourism company founded and run by husband and wife, Sebastian Silva and Belen Alcorta, will definitely prove to be your best resource.

Young and proactive, reliable and professional, they offer a variety of tours that will help you get the most of what Los Organos has to offer and more , as their passion for nature, the ocean and ecotourism permeates their services, and proves to be contagious. While traveling it does make a difference to find a good operator that provides a great service, but it is even better if this is done by people who have chosen the area as their home, know where the best of everything can be found, and who place respect for the environment and sustainable tourism at the forefront of their vision. So whether it is snorkeling, fishing, surfing or boat trips, Pacífico Adventures has it all; equipment, personalized service and insider’s tips on how to enjoy this northern destination thoroughly, without having a negative effect on the environment. It is refreshing to find a tour operator that is not only great at what it does, but does it right.

At this point, there is nothing else left to do but to allow the subtle charms of this destination speak for itself. So buckle up, tune up your senses, and come.

los organos, what a BORING place. full of brain dead surfers.
I tried to rustle up some local snorkeling there, no luck.
maybe I should have gone with an overpriced tour organiser...
mancora, great waves, otherwise a low end tourist party hole.
