Cajamarca may easily convert itself in to the ideal weekend destination, due to the popular “Baños del Inca” (Incan Baths). The Baños del Inca, as their name suggests, are natural thermal baths located just six kilometers east of the city of Cajamarca. The Baños del Inca have suites that include rooms with hydro-massage, Jacuzzis filled with the thermal bathwater, and pools.
If you travel there from the 5th to the 7th of September, you will be just in time to celebrate the 50 year anniversary of the creation of the district of Baños del Inca. The celebration will honor the town’s traditions of conservation and strict management of water resources.
If you attend the celebrations, you will be able to watch parades, attend mass, produce art, watch cultural dances and songs, and participate in rituals, such as the qoñi yaku, in which over 70 artists will participate. The cultural activities are dominated by the presence of water and dancing.

It was here, in Baños del Inca, where the Inca Atahualpa rested before he was captured by Francisco Pizarro. The historian Cieza de León in his chronicles states that “in the palaces built by the Incas in Cajamarca, there were many things to see, especially very nice baths, where the royalty bathed.”
The baths are said to possess special healing powers, and will cure you body and soul. These baths have existed, as you have probably already realized, since the Incan empire. The water, which stems from underground streams, was used principally for recreation, according to various chronicles.
Today, over four thousand visitors pass through the baths every day, and is the principle tourist attraction of Cajamarca. Last year, the Peruvian newspaper El Comercio had a contest in which over 155 million voters elected the 7 Wonders of Peru, and the Incan Baths were one of the winners.
