Tired of the living the rigors of the European rat race, Valerie Barbier – originally from France, came to Peru to fulfill her quest of finding something that would take her away from the suffocating business environment that steered her to contemplate the true meaning of her career.
After just a month and a half of living in Peru, Barbier developed an internal desire to stay in the country in which she knew little about before arriving to work for a non governmental organization (NGO) in the Peruvian Andes. However, her term at the NGO ended and it was time for her to return to home.
Once back in Europe, Barbier found herself wanting to return to the country whose food she says is better than that of her native country's (her favorites include ceviche, anticuchos, tamales, and Peruvian corn with cheese). So she packed up her belongings and returned to Peru.
It was in the Andean city of Huancayo where the natural entrepreneur first heard of native Peruvian plants with antioxidant qualities... The seed was planted.
Her idea: To make natural skin care creams based from plants and ingredients native to the Andean nation.
During the months that ensued, Barbier, who had previously worked in the European pharmaceutical sector, dedicated her efforts and countless hours of time to studying these special plants at different universities.
Her creams, sold under the brand name Mishki, (a name inspired by a word in Quechua -the remnant Incan language- that means ‘sweet’) are made from a variety of native Peruvian plants and tubers including purple potatoes -found only in the Peruvian Andes and the jungle plant ungurahui (pronounced un-gu-rah-wee). Mishki creams are currently sold in the Peruvian capital at FASA pharmacies (including FASA locations in Arequipa, Piura, Trujillo, etc.), supermarkets (Wong), and natural product shops (Natural Shop, Madre Natura, and Waliki).
In addition to being extraordinary facial products, Mishki creams are sustainable products since they help support the Andean and jungle communities of Peru through the use of ingredients produced directly from nature, the employment of indigenous people in harvesting and pre-processing, and through local educational and training programs.
Product Breakdown
MISHKI for day: for normal to oily skin - This is a hydrating and antioxidant cream which contains an extract of a potato unique to the Peruvian Andes, cultivated and harvested by indigenous Andeans. Its texture is very smooth and penetrates almost immediately without leaving a lingering oily feel. The color is creamy and this product is scent free.
MISHKI for night: this cream comes in two types, all skin types or normal to dry.
-All skin types: Contains an essential oil (muña) an Andean plant which is harvested direct from nature by Andean people. Thanks to the muña oil this cream contains an antioxidant and thymol, an effective natural preservative. It also produces a relaxing sense of wellbeing at bedtime. The texture is slightly oilier than MISHKI for daytime but it still penetrates very quickly and gives the skin a smooth texture.
-Normal to dry: Is made with oil from the jungle plant ungurahui (
Oenocarpus bataua M.), harvested from the jungle by indigenous people. Ungurahui oil contains Omega 3 and 6 essential oils and actively regenerates skin cells for rapid healing of dry or cracked skin. The delicate smell of the cream evokes pleasant, woody aromas.
The evaluation of suitability and tolerance was made on a group of volunteers consisting of 46 women (Peruvian, French, Belgian, American, Canadian and English), between the ages of 28 and 65 years of age, within a period of 21 days.
54% of the volunteers reported that the cream penetrates very rapidly, 31% said that it is not oily while 9% stated that it has a pleasant perfume.
48% of the 22 volunteers told us that the skin was smoother, more hydrated (20%), firmer (17%) and more radiant (9%).
