During 2007, Peruvian handicrafts exports have been one of the most dynamic sectors. It is estimated that by the end of that year total exports of these goods might have reached US$142 million, including jewelry. This is explained by the fact that more and more people join this sector and are benefiting from the gains of foreign trade.

It is also important to note that this sector is very important in terms of job generation, especially in socioeconomic sectors C, D and E (lowest), mostly in rural areas of the country. Almost 2 million people are dedicated to handicrafts nationwide. Most of them work in groups or associations, establishing small business companies that, after proper preparation, can produce in a standard manner.

A colleague and I have started a jewelry improvement project with the Shipibo-Konibo artisan women in Pucallpa (Amazon jungle). We are teaching them to use pliers to make their work easier, better threads, select their seeds and beads better, are teaching them to calculate their costs correctly and manage their sales. We have also managed to place big and consistant orders for their things locally.
These women are very skilled in the art of ceramics, embroidery and fabric painting, both of which they do with materials prepared by themselves and the designs they use come from their vast knowledge of nature and their cosmovision.
We will be more than happy to contact you with them when you come to Peru, should you be interested in products from the Amazon Basin.
