Peru: Importing competitiveness

AmCham PeruInfo provided by the
American Chamber of Commerce of Peru (AmCham Peru)

A couple of weeks ago we shared with you the business opportunities that the Peru – United States Trade Promotion Agreement (PTPA) offers to our country, not only for exporting using the preferential access to the American market, but for importing products that may attract the attention of the increasing demand of our industry.

As said before, the PTPA eliminates the tariffs for the products that Peru and United States exchange, and therefore robust trade between our countries in both ways. In other words, by dismantling the PTPA will allow us to export more but also, import more. The exported goods will come from sector where our country has revealed advantages for production while imported products will depend both on the demand of our market and our commercial partner’s ability to produce with competitive advantages.

Then considering that Peru and United States are complementary economies, the agreement will promote that each one exports according to its advantages and import goods that cannot produce efficiently. For instance, Peru could export agro industry products, textile and apparel and import at the same time, capital goods, machinery and equipment at more competitive prices, also considering that the appreciation of the exchange rate makes import goods cheaper.

This possibility to import capital goods gives to our industry the opportunity to extend their production capacity and modernize their technology. For example, agro industry businessmen will be able to export their products to a market with a great consumption capacity and also buy machines and irrigation technology. Also, producers of textile and apparel could, thanks to the PTPA, sell their products and at the same time, buy machinery that could bring solutions for the yarn scarcity or computers that facilitate innovative designs with more added value.

Even when this opportunity to modernize is available for every sector, the small and medium enterprises are the one that could benefit the most because they are the ones with more urgent need for the acquisition or modernization of equipment and also have fewer resources for that. Then, thanks to the reduced tariffs, they will access these products at lower prices.

As we live in a globalized and competitive world, it has become more evident that companies need to increase their efficiency each day and in that process, the acquisition of capital goods and high technology is fundamental. Then, the elimination of tariffs to imported products that increase our competitiveness, via PTPA, commercial agreements or unilateral liberalizations will always be a good deal for pour country.

Actions by the our two countries make an understadning of international shipping very important for small business owners in the United States. We  will make a point in our blog to emphasize the special tariff relationship.

I currently represent a Spa (hot tub) company that designs and manufactures in the US. We are looking for a Distributor in Peru. We believe that the trade agreement will help us bring our high end products at an affordable price to new commercial and residential projects in Peru. If you want to know more about this business opportunity, please contact me.
