Northern Peru is home to cotton production in Latin America. The varieties produced in Peru are: pima, tanguis, rough, hill and native. Our weather is the most conducive to the world for the cultivation of cotton.

Today, cotton is considered the white gold of Peru. And this is the main input for the development of the textile sector, one of the main sectors exporting more. In recent years, the increase in exports of textiles and apparel to the United States has been quite remarkable, since 2005, according to figures from the Peruvian and U.S. Customs; we have surpassed the US$ 800 million in textile export and clothing.

The United States is one of the major importers of cotton garments and textiles from Peru. In 2008, the product more exported was by the value of US$ 807,624,547 and corresponded to the tariff item 6109100031 (t-shirt unisex cotton dyed a single color). The second product more exported was by the value of US$ 151,670,638 and corresponded to the tariff item 6105100041 (shirts for men knitted cotton). Similarly, the third product more exported was by the value of US$ 80,356,865 and correspond to the tariff item 6109100039 (other t-shirt for men and women).

In 2008, the Peruvian companies exporting more importantly were: Devanlay Peru SAC by the value of US$ 100, 435,390; Confecciones Textimax SA for the value of US$ 80, 946,049; Topy Top SA for the value of US$ 76,424,860 in exports to the United States.

This industry is vertically integrated, generates about 350,000 direct jobs in the apparel chain. That is why the tariff benefits boost growth. With the FTA, cotton as an input has a zero tariff from the beginning.

The effects of the FTA with the United States was looking gradually, and cotton is one of the products will benefit from this trade agreement, which will result in increased investment and employment in the textile industry and clothing.
