Courier Companies Experience Sustained Growth

Taken From El Comercio

After the decentralization of different services in Peru, such as  commercial development in the provinces, the market for courier services experienced sustained growth. According to Gonzalo Gulman, executive president of the company of mass messaging “Urbano Express,” more opportunities exist for the sector, such as the transportation of documents or the delivery of a light load. In this sense, Gulman expressed that one of the strongest areas of messaging, direct marketing, has pushed the sector ahead, due to the grater access of sectors C and D to consumer credits.

In 2003, approximately 80% of the couriers worked in Lima, while 20% worked in provinces. “Today, approximately, 60% work in Lima while the rest work in the provinces,” Gulman said, who projects that in 2011 these statistics could be reversed.

Courier Services and Crisis

According to Gulman, the courier market has up to 300 million shipments or deliveries per year, and Urbano Express covers 130 million of them, leading to a turnover of US$14 million. The expansion of the financial sector, motivated not only by the entrance of new firms, but also by the increase of bank clientele, has also contributed to the business, due to the fact that multiple services have become necessary. “Credit cards, bank statements, mailing and marketing must all be sent out. All of this generates correspondence that makes the market [for courier services] continue to increase,” explains Gulman.

However, at the beginning of this year, the sector was affected by the world financial crisis. Gulman had expressed that in 2009 his company was expected to grow 25%; but his goals were reduced by the crisis. “The number of marketing campaigns for Mother’s and Father’s Day, or for the first day of school decreased, but now that the worst part of the crisis is over, the data is improving for the rest of the year.

The company was hoping to end the month of May with 37 agencies in the country, but as of today, they only have 19 offices in the principal cities of Peru. The company initially tried to work in other locations through various representatives, but they did not end up having good results.

GPS: Higher Efficiency

According to Gulman, Urbano Express was the first company in Latin America to bring CPS technology to Peru’s mass messaging service. He did so in order to supervise, in real time, the delivery of documents, and in this way, he made his service much more efficient. With this proposition, they won in the category of “Logistics in Business Creativity, 2008.” “This was a year ago,” he states “and now there are many people who have the service.”

GPS in itself doesn’t represent a reduction in costs, but rather it converted itself into a comparative advantage, which has allowed Gulman to widen his portfolio of clients.

Now the company has diversified its services, which also includes slimmed down logistics. “If a bank opens a new agency in a province, we bring them their signs, desks and packets. The success of our business depends on the creation of a constant and innovative way of benefiting ourselves and our clients,” Gulman stated.
