Judith Westphalen in Miraflores - Exhibition

The Municipality of Miraflores and its Culture department proudly inaugurated, on the 28th of June, the two renovated art galleries Luis Miró Quesada Garland and Raúl Porras Barrenechea, now perfectly adapted to receive all kinds of art events and exhibitions.

To celebrate the occasion, the Municipality chose to show a retrospection of the artwork of Judith Westphalen (Catacaos, 1922- Roma 1976), a talented and self-taught painter, married to the well-known Peruvian poet Emilio Adolfo Westphalen.

Her paintings, drawings, engravings and notes all reflect her technical mastery in monotype, geometrical cuts, ink and pencil drawings. The exhibition displays the different steps of her artistic evolution, largely influenced by her visits to New York, Florence, Rome and Lima.
However, the exhibition goes further by offering more than 120 art pieces, as well as documents on her life, books and interesting critics, exposing a bit about the her relationship with the poet.

“Each new artistic experience leaves me more and more convinced that the expressive power of shapes and colors is endless, and it makes me understand that freedom is an essential factor in the creative process. There is nothing more heart-warming for an artist, given the hard time that humanity is going through, than knowing that, by choosing their own shapes and colors, they choose to follow their own spiritual necessity, their own imagination, moved by the desire to find a new language which could allow him to express himself and make obvious his condition of a sensible person who, physically and morally, is part of reality, contemplates it, observes it and is capable of creating new images that always make sense”, said Judith Westphalen in 1968 concerning her artwork.

With this re-opening exhibition, the Municipality hopes to reach a large public. The new managing team, composed of Emilio Tarazona, Sharon Lerner, Miguel López, Rubén Ramos, Rafael Bellido and directed by the curator Rodrigo Quijano –recently in charge of the Oficina de Artes Plásticas del Centro Cultural Ricardo Palma de la Municipalidad de Miraflores-, wants to give a new dynamism to the galleries.

The exhibition was produced with the help of the “Centro Cultural Peruano Norteamericano de Arequipa”. It will then be transferred to the “White City” of Arequipa.

Where: Luis Miró Quesada Garland Gallery - corner of Av. Larco and Diez Canseco and Raúl Porras Barrenechea Gallery - basement of the Centro Cultural Ricardo Palma, Larco 770

Out of the Blue - Theater

Three disciples of Marcel Marceau: Wolfram von Bodecker, Alexander Neander and Lionel Menard, present a wordless show that fuses theater and magic with the art of miming.

The cello player is accompanied by a cheerful bandit, as well as his cello case, whose adaptability will help our two main characters to face difficult circumstances.

Through this adventure, the transformation of an object shows us the metamorphosis of a lonely man who progressively recovers the joy of life, exploring the imagination and fantasy that survive inside him.
