The Secret Garden - Theater

The Secret Garden is a musical based in the book of the same name, written by Frances Hodgson Burnett.
The play tells the story of Mary Lennos, a lonely girl that losses her parents due to a cholera epidemic in 1909, Since then she moves to live with his uncle, Archibald Craven, in a dark mansion in London.

The environment is spooky until Mary discovers a secret garden that belongs to Lily, the dead wife of his uncle, and together with Martha, the housekeeper, his brother Dickon and the old gardener Ben, Mary discovers the secrets of that garden and lives endless adventures.

Kimbafa

Kimbafa, a show which mixes rhythm, percussion and Afro-Peruvian dance, transforms these elements into language, with many underlying themes that exemplify the flamboyant elements of
everyday life in Lima.

It is a contemporary show that showcases what Lima is today, a cosmopolitan city where the ethnically diverse population of Native Indian, European, African, and Oriental migration is strikingly apparent.
The city of Lima and its unique inhabitants are the characters of this story which embeds flavor, Quimba (rhythm), and the day-to-day life of Lima's Afro-Peruvian population. The performers add to th remarkable cultural attributes of our city and its society, and execute their performance with a pride and humility that highlights their unique talent.

Every instrument in the show comes together in perfect harmony. Lima is a city that is crying out and wants desperately to be heard. KIMBAFA and its different sound portrays Lima in different stages: Lima at dawn, Popular Lima, a Joyful Lima. The show is a manifestation of people who enjoy their roots deeply and express their joy freely without boundaries.

5th "Gran Concierto de Gala"

Two talented Peruvian musicians return to their country after many years to perform at the Colegio Santa Ursula Auditorium. Maestro David del Pino Klinge will conduct the University of Lima’s Orchestra while guitarist Alexander-Sergei Ramírez will perform Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez. The program includes Beethoven’s “Egmont�? overture and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 in E minor, Op. 64. Afterwards, a dinner will be held at the Swissôtel.

Travel from Lima to Huancayo by train

The new service of the train permits an alternative for many that are growing suspect of Peru’s internal bus system.

Diana Tamashiro, General Manager of Tourism for FCA, said this new service has all of the comforts one would expect, with the addition of breathtaking views of the Andes. The addition of this service will impulse the development of tourism and the local economies of Junín and the adjacent departments.

Huancayo is located in the central highlands in the Junín Region, at altitude of approximately 3,271 meters (10,731 ft) and is considered to be the cultural and commercial center of the entire central Peruvian Andes area.

Andrea Miranda – Photography Exhibition

The Lucía de la Puente Art Gallery presents a photo exhibition by the late Andrea Miranda, considered one of Lima’s most talented young photographers. Miranda, who studied in the Escuela Superior de Arte Corriente Alterna, was well known for her panoramic views of public spaces showing popular culture. These images were achieved by joining various shots of a certain scene and piecing them together.

Film Night: Las Doce Sillas

40 Lotes - Exhibition


Celebrating its 40th anniversary, The Engraving Specialty of the Art Faculty of the PUCP is presenting this exhibition, where the word "lote" (lot) conceptualizes an space of construction and change. The exhibition shows the advances that this specialty has gone through in the past forty years, from a perspective that includes and integrates other areas of art and sciences.

Rediseñando el Diseño - Exhibition

The exhibition "Rediseñando el Diseño" presents work from the graphic design students of the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. The show features a great variety of projects and pieces made in 2006, which illustrate the possibilities of graphic design: as mediums of communication, editorial and corporation communication, multimedia, audiovisuals and graphic production of textiles and objects.

El Elogio de la Sombra - Exhibition

This exhibition presents paintings, sculptures and photography created by the well known plastic artists: Rhony Alhalel, Michiko Aoki, Nani Cárdenas, Jorge Castilla Bambarén, Roberto Cores and Mariana Riveros.

On this occasion, the artists will be united around the Japanese writer Junichiro Tanizaki, El Elogio de la Sombra, who will be the center and inspiration for each one of their creative interpretations.

Re/Generation Pop - Exhibition

Art Gallery “Enlace Arte Contemporáneo” displays the exhibition “Re/Generation Pop” where artists from Argentina, Uruguay and Peru will present their photos, paintings, collages and other objects, directly influenced by the Pop phenomenon. 2O years after Andy Warhol’s death, modern artists reinvent pop art by giving it different approaches. Among them, the well known Marta Minujin (Argentina), the Argentinean Marcos López and Claudio Roncoli, the Uruguayan Juan Burgos and the Peruvian Jorge Cabieses and Jaime Higa.

4th Huánuco Art Exhibition

33 paintings and 4 sculptures by various artists from Huánuco will be displayed at the Museo de la Nación, showing their city’s traditions, folklore and beliefs. The exhibition will also include photos of landscapes and people by Fernando Zárate, a series of masks by Jorge Orionda, Fileno Dávila and Peregrina Illatopa, and a collection of newspaper and magazine articles donated by Manuel Nieves. In addition, pastries, decorative items and textile art such as scarves, purses and gloves will be on sale.

Cavalhadas de Pirenópolis – Photography Exhibition

Photographer Vinicius Luz presents his exhibition “Cavalhadas de Pirenópolis: O TEATRO POPULAR,” a selection of photographs of the “Festa do Divino e das Cavalhadas de Pirenópolis” in 2003, a traditional celebration of European origins that simulates a war between Moors and Christians concluding with a friendship between the two sides and the conversion of the Moors to Christianity. The exhibition focuses on the popular Brazilian culture that resists external influences, showing the value of popular tradition in a world where these are constantly being left behind.

Seymi Togo - Exhibition

Seymi Togo (Tokyo, 1958) studied at the Fine Arts School of Joshibijutsu, in Japan. From 1978 until last year she organized nine exhibitions, in Japan and Bolivia.

In this exhibition she presets work influenced by the oriental and occidental techniques, and Peruvian themes. Her paintings fuse an original identity with modern realism.

The Peruvian artist Rafael García Miró displays his latest creation in which he uses our country's coast to create natural textures.

Opera and Zarzuela Season

Lima’s Lyrical Season 2007 opens this month with a production of “Carmen” by Bizet, performed in the leading roles by María Luján Mirabelli, mezzosoprano from the Teatro Colón of Buenos Aires, who will share the role of Carmen with Ana Caridad Acosta of Mexico; by Spanish tenor Enrique Ferrer, and Peruvian tenor Andrés Veramendi, who recently sang the same role in Madrid; and by other leading Mexican and Argentine artists and 17 leading Peruvian singers. Lima’s Lyrical Season 2007 continues with two very enjoyable zarzuelas, Spanish operettas, Los Gavilanes and La Verbena de la Paloma. Musical director is Enrique Ricci and stage producer is Carlos Fernandez de Castro of Spain for all three productions.

The Idle Americans - Concert

The Idle Americans will play at Murphy 's Irish Pub in Miraflores on Saturday, August 11th from 9pm until the wee hours. Who are The Idle Americans? They are a band consisting of two teachers from Colegio Roosevelt (the American School of Lima) Lee Piscioneri and Rob St.Clair and two local musicians Christian Becker and Netto Perez. They do covers from the 60's, 70's and 80's ranging from the Stones, Beatles, Clapton and Dylan to Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Pink Floyd, Tom Petty, Badfinger, and U2. Federico Morón Campodónico, a sculptor who has presented individual and collective exhibitions in Peru and other countries, shows us his latest works of art at the Alianza Francesa in Miraflores. Morón sculpts spontaneously, creating varied shapes that reach their final form as he works, considering that his pieces are the reflection of “what can only be expressed through sculpture.” These sculptures are made of marble or bronze, with tones that vary from black to white.

This exhibition displays a collection of chairs for both rural and urban use made in different parts of the country. Mi nombre es Rachel Corrie - Theater

Rachel Corrie was a North American university student, who dreamed
of being a poet and writer.
She felt the necessity to understand the world she lived in and to
know the truth behind the global structures that determine our world's truth.

During the play, the audience lives the growth process that took Rachel from a privileged middle-class in the US to the Gaza Strip in the
Middle East, where she worked as a volunteer supporting people with
enthusiastic humanitarian work.
Each word in the play is a copy of the same young person, published in
newspapers, e-mails, recordings and letters kept by her parents during the time she lived abroad.

Runcie Tanaka - Exhibition

Ceramist and visual artist Carlos Runcie Tanaka presents his exhibition “SOLO NUBES / I’ve looked at clouds from both sides now” at the Centro Cultural Inca Garcilaso of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Here, he includes pieces he has created in the last 12 years, as well as some of his more recent artwork, for which he has used diverse materials and techniques such as ceramic, glass, photography and video.

The artist associates his view of the landscape with his father and grandfather’s visions by incorporating their photography into this project, allowing his family’s history to become involved in this journey through time and memory.

Carlos Runcie Tanaka studied Philosophy at the PUCP and later went on to study the art of pottery making in Brazil, Italy and Japan. He has participated in various collective exhibitions including biennial exhibitions in Havana, Venice, Cuenca, Caracas and Sao Paulo.

Salon Amapola

Marcela Pardón presents mambos and tangos in French, Italian and English, as: "Amapola", "Muñeca Brava", "A pesar de todo" and " La tirana".

La Rebelión de los Chanchos - Theater

A group of farm animals, tired of being exploited and mistreated by their owner, decide to rebel and construct a world in which all will live happily and with justice. The animals drive out the farmer and
take control of the place, establishing a democratic government.

Little by little, power reveals the true nature of each one of them, threatening to destroy the dream of a better world. The "Rebelión de los Chanchos" is a musical spectacle for adults and a political satire.

Brotes del Recuerdo - Exhibition

Using the photography, artist Luz Negib begins a reproduction process of original pieces to later mix it with other images that remeber some of her pass workd.
The art pieces, resulto f her exploration, are the representation of intuitions and the contact with the nature and the human figure.

Coro Femenino PUCP - Concert

Ludicus - Theater

Ludicus is a show with speechless clowns, like the ones from classic theater.
The Tropa del Eclipse group, which performs in this show, is a Peruvian group founded in Lima back in 1997, and from its begging have continuously investigated the techniques of how to mix theater and the circus. You will enjoy the result of it in this show.

Swingers – Theater for adults

Mariela and Ernesto, the couple of swingers that appear in this play, consider the possibility of giving an audacious turn to their boring marriage of fifteen years, exchanging couples, but the idea is not shared by both of them. Ernesto tries to convince Mariela as they have lunch, and he transforms the meal into a laughing battle between confusion and curiosity.

The Lion King - Theater

All the animals celebrate the newborn lion: Simba. The Lion King Mufasa teaches  his son how to be a good king of the jungle, but his life soon ends when his evil uncle Skar plots against Mufasa, kills him and blames his death on Simba. The young lion, with plenty of fear, escape towards the jungle and lives there for many years, until  he decides to go back and face his past fears.

La Nona - Theater

This is one of the best Latin-American plays with dark humor tones. The story highlights a family of Italian descendants who suffer a deep economic crisis in Argentina. They are forced to face their grandmother, a 100 years old Italian "nona" hunger, and her non-stop eating habit.

Vito Loli - Exhibition

Vito Loli is the grand nephew of renowned French artist Paul Gauguin.  Loli is a self-trained artist who knows how to effectively blend various techniques and materials to portrait his passion for nature and the female body.

Most of his artwork integrates these two passions, accomplishing images that are very personal and provocative.

Through his artwork, the artist tries to share his introspective voyage, using nature as a metaphor.

In his portraits, Vito blends female faces with nature's manifestations, such as birds, fish, butterflies and trees. Many of these portraits depict the native beauty of which he is so passionate about.

Bodas de sangre - Theater

(English title: Blood Wedding)

This play, written back in 1932 by Spanish playwright Federico García Lorca, is the first play from the author´s trilogy of rural tragedies.

It tells the classic story of a young woman who is not allowed to marry her lover and is instead forced to marry a more 'suitable' man whom she does not love.

Hansel and Gretel - Theater for children

Hansel and Gretel (German: Hänsel und Gretel, pronounced "Hensel") is a fairy tale of Germanic origin, adapted by the Brothers Grimm.

Hansel and Gretel are the children of a poor wood cutter. Fearing starvation, the wood cutter's wife convinces him to lead the children into the forest and abandon them there. Hansel and Gretel hear her plan and gather white pebbles to leave themselves a trail home. After their return, their mother again convinces the wood cutter to abandon them; this time however, they can only leave a trail of bread crumbs. Unfortunately, animals eat them and Hansel and Gretel become lost.

Alone in the middle of the forest, they finally find a house made of gingerbread and candy and the hungry children begin to eat. The old woman living in the house invites them in and prepares a feast for them. However, she is a witch who built the house to entice children so that they may
fatten before she eats them.

Novalima live in concert

Novalima is an Afro-Peruvian production created in 2001 by four Peruvian musicians based in Barcelona, Hong Kong, London and Lima. On a mission to bring Afro-Peruvian music up-to-date, they have managed to capture the real soul of Afro-Peru in the same way as Gotan Project did with Tango.

The result is magnificent. Its raw and acoustic but at the same time electronic. Dark but soulful, deep and haunting at times. Killer dub bass lines with thumping cajon, quijada and conga percussions, layered with 100 year old slavery chants, emotive vocals, and sweet guitars.

Don Juan Tenorio - Theater

Don Juan Tenorio, the mythical character featured in the most celebrated plays of Spanish writer Jose Zorrilla, reappears in Lima at the Museum Cemetery Presbítero Maestro Matías. The show is directed by Myriam Reátegui and produced by the Cultural Center of Spain.
It is recommended to wear comfortable shoes, as the public has to walk by the cemetery
