Very good
I've been there twice with my friend Peter and it was always good. The owner?s special chilli (dressing) is really good and ?spicy? and I go back there anytime to enjoy ?Mexico?.

Poor
The first time I went here I thought the food was sub-par Mexican, but that maybe we were hitting an off day. The owner was really sweet and the atmosphere was colorful and well done, so I was willing to give it another try. The second time I went I knew it wasn't just a fluke - the food was awful! There wasn't a spice to be found, the chicken was completely flavorless and the ingredients were so watery I wondered if the fajitas were going to hold up. Everyone we went with felt basically the same way - Taco Bell and Chichi's have more flavor. It's a shame that this is what passes for Mexican in Lima.

Hear Hear Liz! There's not much for you if you're looking for Mexican food in Peru (Chili's is Mexican???). Have you tried el "Taco Naco" near the corner of V. Astete and Av. Benavides in Surco? It's a little small but you can get mole poblano, horchata, huaraches, menudo, and pozole! Be wary of the keep though.

Excellent
I ve tried both "agua para chocolate" and "el taco naco" and I have to say that "the taco naco" is way better. The local is small but very welcoming, Rosa Alicia and her daughter Karinna are very nice and the most important the food is excellent, very clean, and cheap. The food quality, taste, flavours are authentic.

Excellent
I'm going to chime in with a hearty thumbs-up for Como Agua Para Chocolate. My extravagent 5-stars are rewarded solely on the basis of the restaurant's chicken mole, which is the best I've tasted in the U.S. and South America (I haven't been to Mexico).

The mole sauce is both sweet and spicy --  not bitter and flat, the way mole often turns out. I have searched for years to find mole prepared this way. (I hope the kitchen staff doesn't alter the recipe in the future.)

My husband likes the restaurant's almuerzo special, which is hearty and affordable. We ate here together for dinner, and the prices were a little high for Lima standards, but  not for San Isidro.

The food is great, and the place is nice to have some drinks with co-workers.

I think those evaluating the food poorly must be looking for tex mex...sorry folks, but Taco Bell and Chilis are not mexican food.  Real mexican food can at times be picante but also can be very subtle.  The owners of the restaurant are welcoming, the ambience is very comfortable and the food is home-cooked and great.  There is a dedication to real regional recipes and ingredients, despite how difficult it can be to find the right thing.  And if you need something just a bit different, or a special favorite recipe...they'll do what they can to please.  This is a favorite among our friends for comfortable and friendly evenings out.   And yes, the luncheon special is a great deal.

I ate at Taco Naco based on a few people recommendations here in the Como Aqua para Chocolate comments  and I have to say it was a waste of time and money. The food was horrible, my wife and I ate only half before we paid and left. I will instead go try Como Aqua para Chocolate and give a update after i try it.

Very good
After a long Taxi ride trough the noisy Lima traffic the (to) loud Mexican music was a turn off entering the place! (I almost left, why Lima is that noisy?)
Sitting on the second floor i started to feel better and enjoy the atmosphere which is nice and interesting.
The menu was very hard to understand i hardly had a clue what the things on it meant, my Peruvian friend also couldn't figure out the menu.
I guess this error plagues many restaurants, a menu translated in English and some pictures would help a lot. (or many end up ordering stake)
I was not disappointed by the food at all, the nachos with the green creamy dip where very nice and tasty. The pollo boracho was Delicious, the chicken was so soft and full of taste, the portion size was sufficient. I also took the Fruit salad dessert with icecream, it was to much for me, but i enjoyed what i ate, the fruits where juicy and as fresh you can get them.
They also have foreigns beers in this restaurant even beers (Guinness, Hoegaarden, grand cru) i did no see anywhere in Lima before, it's nice to be able to enjoy an Guinness with your meal.
After all i can recommend this place, it more expensive then average in Lima but it's worth to pay a visit.

I actually think this place is way better than El Taco Naco. I used to live by Taco Naco, ate there a couple of times, it was okay, the horchata was gross, made me gag. My husband and I went to Como Agua para Chocolate for our anniversary, and I loved the beef fajitas, loved everything (except the drunk people doing karaoke upstairs, giving Americans a bad name!). Even the owner was staggering a little--it was Saturday night, and she was walking around with a Corona. My husband (Peruvian) is not a huge fan of Mexican food, but he liked it, just said it was overpriced. I think it is a bit, but I really enjoyed it. And she forgot to tell me how to get hold of the monjitas that make her corn tortillas, so I can get some for home, or at least the masa.
