Traffic
The traffic reflects the education of the people. In the big cities of Peru particularly in Lima, traffic is chaotic and noisy, trafficc rules and streetsigns are ignored. When you drive be aware of the vans of public transport called locally "combis", many combi drivers do not respect the rules as well as other drivers.

The means of tranport you find here are buses, combis and taxis in all shapes and sizes, there are some small cars called "ticos" which are better to avoid due to the fragility of the car. The price in a combi is roughly S/.1,00 (un nuevo sol), while the prices for a taxi ride change though they are not expensive, there are no taximeters so you have to find out. If you do not know the city and are not good at Spanish, it would be recommended to call after a taxi from a taxi company.

Accidents
If you drive car, it is a must to have a car insurance due to the high number accidents and robberies. If you are involved in an accident, contact the insurance company for assistance. If a driver is stopped for drinking and driving under the influence of alcohol, a blood test is required and if there is someone injured there will also be required a blood test. Always ask for ID from the police officers before you get out of the car.

Driver’s Licenses
A foreign driver’s license is valid for six months when entering Peru; after this period it is renewable each time you enter the country. After six months it is necessary to obtain a Peruvian license; diplomats are exempt from this rule.

Police
Police are generally friendly and respectful. Nevertheless, there are some corrupt policemen who can ask for money instead of giving a fine. It is important not to accept their bribes since this is illegal.

Theft
To deter theives, never leave valuables in your car. It is better to park the car in a parking lot or ask a guard to watch it.
