I took Civa from Cusco to Lima overnight in Oct. 2006, and the bus broke down somewhere in the desert outside Nasca. After waiting for about two hours for a new bus to arrive, the driver confirmed that he had not in fact been able to get in contact with the main office, and he was not sure when another bus would arrive to pick us up... this was midday in the middle of the desert, mind you. At that announcement, most passengers decided to take matters into their own hands, and walk -luggage in tow- to Nasca (believed to be about 30km away). For the rest of us who stayed, no food or water was provided by Civa staff, and if it were not for some residents of a small village (aka one tiny bodega) about 30 min walk from our bus who took advantage of the opportunity to sell some maize and soft drinks, we would have been left in the desert for 9 hours without food or water. In the end a bus did arrive, but there was absolutely no effort on the part of Civa to amend the misfortune. One really bad experience, but enough to make me take another company in the future... oh, and it took our bus an hour and a half to reach Nasca, so who knows what happened to the brave souls who decided to make the trek by foot.
