Living in Peru : your everyday companion

Last Sunday, I went with my host brother and two other guys to the biggest fútbol game in Peru--Alianza Lima vs. Universitario. I was going for Alianza, but, unfortunately, La U won 3-2. (Note: "La U" translates exactly into "The U," as in The University of Miami... reason enough to dismiss La U as a bunch of thugs...).

It was nice being in an intensely competitive atmosphere once again. In fact, it felt pretty familiar during most of the game, except for a few things. First, Peruvians seem to be obsessed with whistling. So, instead of the "roar" of the crowd, I heard... kind of an intense chirping... or maybe like the screaming of jets or something. The Peruvian fans also bring actual whistles and blow them, too. And, then there are the more agressive noisemakers that sound like cannonfire.

But, otherwise, this was very reminscent of sporting events I have attended in the United States.

...that is, until the game ended. This is when the running began.

At the exact second the game had ended, the thousands of people who had been watching the game on the east and west sides of the field turned simultaneously and booked it toward the exits. Apparently this was due to the presence of the "barra," the Peruvian soccer hooligans on the north and south sides of the stadium.

These upstanding young citizens, I was informed, run out of the stadium and start fighting each other... and I suppose the police... and innocent bystanders. The way Peruvians have made it sound in various conversations, gang members are waiting outside, sharpening their knives, while members of the barra descend on the city center like a plague of locusts.

And so we all ran like our lives depended on it. Perhaps they did, I don't know... but so far in my experiences in Peru, I have found Peruvians to be an overly-worried people. But, hey, they know better than I do, so I follow their lead.

Regardless, the sight as we all careened down the stairs, turned the corner, and flooded the streets reminded me of video footage I have seen of the running of the bulls in Pamplona.

After we turned off of the main street, we slowed to a brisk walk, leaving the natural disaster film that was "Alianza/La U" behind us. My host brother and I walked all the way home, but the entire time he kept saying, "We need to walk fast. Some members of the barra live in my neighborhood, and they might be behind us."

Well, friends, we made it back safely. Just another day in Peru, I suppose...

ALIANZA ojala q ganemos ustedes pueden ponle mas ganas si nosotros no queremos la U de la vuelta olinpica ya pz no somos loos pavos no somos gallina no somos amigos de la polisia si van al estadio van el patruyero todos eso cabros no chupan los guevos blaquia zul blaquiazu....

La U is basically "the white people in Peru" and Alianza Lima is "the black or mixed-race people in Peru" so if you are white just don't carry your wallet around bc it will get stolen from you and another thing always look behind you at all times when walking, if someone is too close turn the corner and start running xoxo

i live in USA  and i'm a peruvian, honestly, i never thought about the whistling thing ,lol
we do though.
is a cultural thing i guess.
about leaving early before the ''hooligans '' is cuz people who go to east and west sides pay more money and people assume they can afford it , so the hooligans are normally poor and they can robbed u right after the game outside , so if u stayed around and they c u foreign w good clothes and stuff, u get robbed automatically unless u have a gun or something,lol
common sense boys, come on.
how would u feel ,alone , surrounded by 10 guys w knifes? , I guess everybody knows the answer.lol

does anyone know if the futbol season goes through the end of Novemeber? I will be visiting Peru then and I would LOVE to see a match but I cant seem to find a schedule online.

Well looks like there will be another clasico this year, but this time will be for the final of the Peruvian championship, so Melissa hopefully you'll be able to watch it. So " Y DALE U". Crema hasta la muerte.

im in lima atm,  sadly we didnt get a ticket for the first leg of the CLASSICO at Matute,  which was my biggest disappointment of my life being a Alianza fan since i was 3yr old growing up in Australia,  we did however manage to get tickets to the return match at Estadio Monumental,  which i have to say looks very impressive,  had to lineup for 8hours to get the tickets,  andwe only managed to as people about 10m behind us who had being there as long missed out........hopefully Alianza can turn the result around send the tie to extra time, and win it with 10seconds before penalties.
