The other day I received a forward email that reminded me of something I learned long ago in a metaphysical class. The message had to do with the importance of how attitude shapes one’s life. Apparently, life is ten percent what happens (the event) and ninety percent the attitude one has toward that event. This made me think of the universal principle on which many great cultures are based on: the Law of Karma.
Karma means action, “to do”; it is a conscious, intentional and dynamic action.
Just the other day, I heard a friend say: “It’s because I have bad karma.” However, karma is not fate or a predestination of what happens to one, rather it is the incredible power that each human being has to impact his or her own life.
The modern saying “What goes around, comes around” is actually a way to express a proverb from ancient times, “You reap whatever you sow…” This truth has also been expressed by the physicist Newton who formulated the law which explains that every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Karma does mean the principle of cause and effect. It is how a person chooses to express his or her thoughts, ideas, fantasies, emotions, and actions that makes the Law of Karma a worthwhile principle.
Did you know that you can actually gain control and improve the quality of your life if you learn to live according to the rules of cause and effect. This sounds exciting, don’t you think? Let’s then explore and highlight some of the principle rules that can bring about a positive outcome in your life.
Do you like yourself and who you have become?
This planet would be a much nicer place if everyone took the responsibility of simply and truly loving who they are. A person can only love others to the extent that they love themselves. If there are some aspects of yourself that you don’t particularly like, then make some changes, one step at a time.
Are you a grateful person?
You are blessed with many different and wonderful personal traits. Being grateful for these abilities immediately increases your satisfaction with who you are.
Being grateful allows you to enjoy the good in your life. Daily, allow yourself to be appreciative of the small things that occur in your life. Don’t wait to achieve the big goals in your life in order to be grateful. Recognize that the small things are also very important in order to live a happier life. Being grateful by nature or learning how to be grateful can actually be good for your health. Gratitude energizes and elevates people.
Do you feel peace and harmony within?
It is essential to create a feeling of peace and harmony in yourself before you can expect it from others. The more peace and harmony we have within our own lives, the more we can reflect into the outer situation. The Dalai Lama emphasizes the importance of world peace. But whenever he touches on the subject of world peace he always makes reference to “inner peace.” In order to have peace in your world, you must first attain
inner peace. Stress and ego and selfish blind passions are the walls that prevent you from feeling the peace within. To attain inner peace and harmony one must meditate, pray, reflect and spend time in nature.
How do you make choices?
Deepak Chopra has said that whenever one makes a choice there are two fundamental questions to ask the self:
“What are the consequences of this choice that I’m making?” and
“Will this choice bring fulfillment and happiness to me and also to those who are affected by this choice?”
When you do your best and act for the highest good of all concerned, you automatically create a positive, happy space.
Sticks and stones…
A challenge for most is the ability to express ourselves in the most meaningful and positive manner. When you communicate with others keep these three things in mind:
~Truth - is always factually correct to the best of your knowledge.
~Necessity - or what “must be said” so that all concerned in the situation can be clear on the issue at hand.
~Kindness - is how you use your words to convey your message. Unpleasant messages can still be delivered in a kind manner.
Mind your thoughts.
You may think that your thoughts are your own personal secrets therefore are of no concerns to others but that is wrong. All your thoughts, all your fantasies are energy that radiates sensations to others. People who are intuitive and sensitive will feel the thoughts of others. Apparently, the power of metaphysical energy is above physical power. So be aware of all your thoughts because they create a reaction in your world. Also, if you have constant disharmony in your mind and emotions - like anger, jealousy, and dishonesty- it will eventually bring forth physical illness.
The guidelines outlined above are simple and logical - guidelines that you may already be familiar with. Yet, why is it that so many people are careless in applying these principles in their lives?
I believe that it has to do with being impatient. Because there is a gap in the time between action and effect one often fails to make the connection between the two. However, when a farmer seeds his field the connection between the attention he gives to the land and the final results of the crop will be obvious. Also, the farmer will need to be patient and wait for the right season to reap the benefits of his hard work. Such it is with the Law of Karma.
An honest and wholehearted belief that the Law of Karma can change your life is a powerful tool to have. With care and patience you can be the master of your own daily happiness.

I very much liked the article on karma by Marie Louise Saina. By sheer coincidence I will be arriving in Lima next week to work on my current research: (1) cultural links between India and South America since ancient times, and (2) traditions of healing in India and South America.# Mercedes says :
I am looking forward to visit Centro de Formation Integral and hopefully discuss with members my perspective on the law of karma.
I am a retired academic based in Montreal. Born in India, I have lived in Montreal for 45 years where I taught religions and culture of India at the university level. One of my publications is entitled Understanding Karma In Light of Paul Ricoeur’s Philosophical Anthropology and Hermeneutics.
The book originates in the conviction that human existence and action can be understood better in terms of a karmic interpretation of philosophical anthropology within the temporal framework of the past, present, and future. The doctrine of karma (along with its essential corollary the cycle of birth-death-rebirth samsara), operates by providing a general interpretive framework for understanding human action and its role in the realization this-worldly and transcendent goals. Any given act is a cause of potentially multiple results because all events are determined by the law of karma. ‘‘Every colour of the peacock’s tail is determined by its own karma’’ as one Tibetan adage puts it.
How do actions bear fruits and what will they be? The answer is: humans essentially live in ambiguity and in anticipation. Since the results of previous karma are psychologically and cognitively indeterminate; they cannot be known until they have actually manifested themselves. The imagery of the shadow gives a hint. A person walking along the road sees his/her accompanying shadow. A bird flying high also casts the shadow but which cannot be seen. As it descends however, the shadow begins to appear on the ground below looming ever larger. Karma is like the bird’s shadow-- there, but not always apparent.
This explains the need and role for hermeneutics (art and science of interpretation). The idea of using the hermeneutics of French philosopher Paul Ricoeur (1913-2005) to interpret the doctrine of karma occurred to me after reading his discussions of the following issues in his works: (1) How can human initiative change the world? and (2) What must be the nature of the world in order than one can introduce change in it.
Bravo to the author for rising above the attacks she previously suffered on this site. In truth, I hope the bully has by now seen the error of her ways and has apologized to M. Saina and her friends.
