Pisco of the Month - El Sarcay de Azpitia

The history of EL SARCAY de Azpitia is a relatively recent one, but none the less a colorful one.

In November of 2004, 7 neighboring farmers of Azpitia, settlers in the area from Lima, sat down to share a friendly outdoor lunch at one of their homes. As it always happens at these types of gatherings, the men went off to try some Pisco while the ladies went off to chat and the children ran off to play. Naturally, the conversation evolved and it came out that each of the members present wanted to produce Pisco from the grapes harvested from their respective lands. Thus, picking up on the common motivation, the production Pisco, the conversation turned to the unification of efforts.

The idea: Instead of having 7 isolated mini-industrial efforts, they should think about uniting into one and taking advantage of the combined potential and production of the seven fields, and put together a larger scope project that would meet with the basic ideas of a unique and modern winery as well as meet all the technical requirements for the production of Pisco. This new project would elevate the traditionally made Pisco of Azpitia to the level that a Pisco of Azpitia could and should have; a position that very few people had been able to achieve due to either a lack of knowledge or budding production volumes.

The El Sarkay winery is located in San Vicente de Azpitia, a pleasant place about 80 Km. South of Lima. It is perched like a balcony over the shores of the Mala River.

Azpitia itself owes its existence to 21 young farmers who, over 100 years ago, planned and created irrigation canals to supply (in those days) the plains of Palapa and Azpitia.
Today, the area is known for its apples, pears, white peaches and grapes, all harvested from an area no larger than 300 hectares of irrigated fields.

The grapes have their own peculiarity due to the unique characteristics of the sandy soil and its singular microclimate. These same grapes are the grapes that are the raw materials for the exceptional Pisco of “EL SARCAY de Azpitia”.

EL SARCAY de Azpitia produces the following varieties of Pisco:
Aromatic varieties
Pisco Puro de Uva Italia - 2007
Pisco Puro de Uva Moscatel
Pisco Puro de Uva Torontel
Pisco Puro de Uva Albilla
Pisco Puro de Uva Italia - 2006

Non Aromatic varieties

In 2007, El Sarkay won the Gold Medal at the Brussels World Contest, a contest that taken place since 1994 and has included Peruvian Piscos for the last 5 years, and it is considered one of the most important ones in Europe in terms of wines and spirits.
