Project to expand the official recognition of Pisco to include all of Peru is rejected by Adex
Lima, (PRESSPERU).- The Association of Exporters (ADEX), expresses its rejection of the proponed law presented by Congressman Aurelio Pastor. This law is looking to extend the official recognition of the DO (Denomination of Origin) “Pisco” to all the regions of Peru.
The president of ADEX’s Pisco Committee, Miguel Poblete, requested the withdrawal of the bill which is currently in Parliament because if it is approved, it would be detrimental to Peruvian Pisco by toppling all of the arguments that allow it to have a DO.

It should be pointed out that currently, this denomination is granted to the production of Pisco grapes cultivated on the coast, in the regions of Lima, Ica, Arequipa, Moquegua and the Valleys of Locumba, Sama and Caplina in Tacna. “Pisco’s denomination of origin is feasible because it meets all the requirements, among those is that it is made in a specific limits geographic area (southern area of Lima and others), which is the basis of our argument to defend its Peruvian nationality”, he explained.
The proposed law was presented last April 30th and it is also signed by the congressmen Mario Alegría Pastor, Alfredo Tomás Cenzano, Luis Negreiros and Jhony Peralta Cruz, among others. It proposes to modify the text content of the 1st article of la No. 26426, regarding the official recognition of Pisco as a Peruvian Denomination of Origin.
One of the arguments given for wanting to change the law is “if Pisco is, really, the national drink, than it is outrageous to limit the official recognition to only one area in the south of the Peruvian territory”.
We must recall that there have been other unfortunate initiatives in the past similar to this which have also been rejected because they undermined on of the main arguments which allow our Pisco to have a recognized DO, which is the cultivation and production in specified areas.
Information
Pisco is produced with a variety of grapes: Quebranta, Mollar, Negra corriente, Uvina, Italia, Torontel, Moscatel and Albilla. This is the argument just like champagne which gets its name from the French region where it is produced. The authorized varieties of grapes with D.O.s are three: “Pinot noir”, “Pinot menieur” and “Chardonnay”.
