To Put You in the MoodBy Marie-Louise Sai

Aphrodisiac foods, herbs and drinks have been part of myths and legends for thousands of years. Not surprisingly, the word aphrodisiac derived from Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, lust and sexuality. Throughout history, there has been a pursuit for magical, mood –enhancing aphrodisiacs.
For the ancient Greeks the fig fruit was one of the sacred fruits believed to help with fertility and love. The temptress Cleopatra declared the fig fruit to be her favorite food.
In ancient Rome, some of the ingredients sought after to provide pleasures were starfish, and dried human marrow. To keep his passion alive with his many intimate encounters, the Aztec emperor consumed large amounts of a frothy chocolate beverage. The Inca used the plant root maca to enhance fertility and improve performance.
No one really knows what the link is between aphrodisiacs and arousal but if you wish to ignite the flame of passion here are some natural ingredients found in Peru.
Today, Peru is home to numerous beneficial natural stimulants that produce effective aphrodisiac results. The Peruvian maca is a legendary root passed down from the Inca and is known for its health benefits. Peruvian maca herb and extract's popularity is very much on the increase as people discover that the plant really does boost libido, and overall energy. In 1988, Townsend Letter for Doctors, quoted physicians who supported the benefits of maca root to increase physical desires in both men and women.
The classic aphrodisiac and the one that has a good reputation is of course the oyster. The world’s greatest lover, Casanova sucked 50 raw oysters each morning in order to sustain his many amorous pursuits. Oysters are low in fat but are high in protein and zinc. Zinc is known to be important for a healthy libido and overall stamina.
Peruvian waters offer some of the most prized treasures for stimulating the appetites. On the culinary front, Mancora is famous for its memorable large oysters cooked in garlic. In Tumbes, the dish to precipitate passion is the famous ceviche de conchas negras. Although conchas negras are black scallops that thrive in the mangroves of Northern Peru they are known to hold the potential of the oyster for increasing passionate desire – or at least the locals seem to think so.
The natural elixir from Tarapoto, are infusions whose recipes were discovered many years ago by the natives. Herbs and plants have been used for centuries as a way for naturally boosting the libido.
The Santa Maria liquors from Tarapoto are known as 100 % natural aphrodisiacs from the jungle of Peru. These love potions are made with cane liquor, wild honey, pollen, herbs, roots and tree bark. I am told that the exotic drink for women is called Rompe Calzon and the one for men is Para, Para.
In A Midsummer Night's Dream, even Oberon tried his hand at some magic love potion:
Fetch me that flower, the herb I show'd thee once;
The juice of it on sleeping eyelids laid
Will make man or woman madly dote
Upon the next live creature that it sees.
Now that you know what your body needs to perform at its best, here is where you can supply yourself with some of these Peruvian aphrodisiacs:
Natural Maca can be bought at Madre Natura - Av. Chiclayo, Miraflores
Santa Maria Natural cocktails - Av.General Garzon 1213, Lima

Thanks for all the romance tips, Marie-Louise. I will definitely add more fresh figs, chocolate, oysters and Santa Maria liquer to our diet, but I'll skip the dried starfish and human marrow, thank you just the same. Natural Maca is one that I'll be looking for at Madre Natura. I'll let you know if they work!!
