Pisco Route: Mala, San Jose de las Flores and Azpitia: Part 1 Gran Cruz

by

Alfredo Alonso

This time we visited a bodega that attracted our attention located in the Mala region. It is the Gran Cruz bodega. Getting there is very easy: When you first enter Mala you have to turn right, heading towards the sea. You follow a dirt road and you will see a wooden door and a salmon-colored hacienda.

STATE-OF-THE-ART TECHNOLOGY

This hacienda, which dates back to the XIXth Century, was purchased by the current owners of the bodega, the Gordillo family. This ancient building had been dedicated to production of cotton, and in these same facilities, about 15 years ago the bodega’s first Piscos came to light.

Today, Gran Cruz buys their grapes from producers who are carefully supervised by the bodega’s personnel. The bodega’s primary concern is to have the best facilities in order to obtain the best results.

Gran Cruz has two stills and a modern set of stainless steel tanks where the Pisco is stored until it is ready to be bottled. Behind all of this bodega’s modern infrastructure, the Pisco-making tradition is maintained safe and sound.

We recommend trying the Uvina variety, it was really very good. We also savored an extraordinary Mosto Verde and fully satisfied, we headed off to our next destination, Azpitia.
