Mistura: Peru’s Gastronomic Festival

Mistura: Peru’s Gastronomic FestivalThere couldn’t be better news. This week Lima will host Peru’s biggest gastronomic festival. As we all know, Peruvians and foreigners alike are crazy about this Andean country’s culinary diversity. And what could be a better way to celebrate it than a four-day weekend where you can try the best of the best Peruvian food?

I don’t know about you, but heck, I’m thrilled. And S/. 20 is a bargain for all that you can experience at the fair. The four days promise to be packed with activities, ranging from presentations, movies, prizes, exhibitions, markets, sampling and much more. I’ve already started planning what I will do each day. Here’s a preview of my activities for the first two days of the festival.

Mistura: Peru’s Gastronomic FestivalOn Thursday I am going to make my way over to the “Patio de Comidas” for an early lunch. For just S/.6, I can get a sample of some of the best dishes from Lima’s best restaurant. I think I could muster eating two lunches on Thursday, don’t you?

Afterwards, I will head over to the Master Class held by Israel Laura called “De los Mercados y sus Cocinas” to learn all about the ways I can incorporate fresh produce into my cooking.

Then, around 4pm I will rush over to the Patio Mistura to watch the selection of the “Best Picarones.” No doubt the competition will provoke my hunger for my favorite Limeñan dessert, so I will have to search through the 100 street venders for just the perfect dish of hot picarones.

After licking my gooey fingers I will head over to the Mercado, where over 186 stands and 500 suppliers will be selling their best products. The market will be dispersed according to theme, region and product. I will pass through the organic section and buy ingredients (of course, following Chef Israel’s recommendations) to make my dinner that night.

And then, at 6pm, I will head over to the Teatro la Cabaña to listen to the experts discuss the “Proyección de la Cocina Peruana y Latinoamericana en el Mundo.” I will be sure to learn a lot. But of course, before sitting down and listening to the panel, I will have to find someone selling anticuchos or choclo con queso, or maybe even an empanada. You know, just to tide me over. It would be a sin, you know, to be hungry at a gastronomic fair.

And, if I’m not too tired, I’ll stick around the fair until it is time to head over to the Movie Theater to watch “Como Agua Para Chocolate.” But, if I am too overwhelmed by all the activities, I may just go home early to prepare a rich dinner of Lomo Saltado, of course, using the advice I gleaned from the experts in the market.

Mistura: Peru’s Gastronomic FestivalFriday, I promise myself, I will arrive at 10am, just in time to see the winner of the Best Bread. I will no doubt need a cup of coffee and a nice “pan frances” to start off the day. Then I will be off to the Esquina del Pan y Queso in order to see the huge variety of breads and cheeses. More than likely, the old favorites will be there, as well as new inventions.

Then, just before lunch, I will head over to Spanish Chef Jaime Renedo’s master class on fusion between Peruvian and Asian Cuisine. Then, I will head over for a S/. 12 lunch at one of the renowned restaurants in the Patio de Comidas. After enjoying a succulent meal, I will definitely need to check out the Cocina Rústica, where I can explore the simple foods such as Pachamanca, caja china and many more.

Then I will need to head over to the "Túnel de la biodiversidad del mar," to see the wide variety of oceanic products that Peru has to offer. And, of course, I can't miss the presentation of the history of Lima's cuisine.

Mistura: Peru’s Gastronomic FestivalTo finish off the day, I will watch the movie "Un toque de canela" after visiting the market and buying more fresh produce for my own kitchen. I am positive I will head home content, and full of new knowledge about Peruvian cuisine, and my own styles of cooking. And, of course, I will head home with some of the best food that Peru has to offer. I mean, seriously, what more could anyone want?

The Peruvian Society of Gastronomy will hold Mistura II from September 24th to the 27th. The exposition will take place in the Parque de la Exposición, which with its 100,000m2, promises to hold plenty of space for the marvels of Peruvian cuisine. Thirty-five restaurants, 100 street venders and many more suppliers hope that over 100,000 people attend the festival this week. To enter, the price is S/. 20 for adults and S/.15 for children.
