INRENA, the body in charge of the management of the network of roads leading to Machu Picchu, has recently released a schedule for the dates when Inca trail permits for 2018 will be on sale.

The Inca Trail is the most famous hiking destination in the American continent.

Every year, more than 172,000 people amongst tourists and workers such as; guides, porters, and cooks hike the Inca trail to one of the wonders of the world; the lost city of Machu Picchu.

People can obtain permits for the Inca Trail only through a certified travel operator.

Also, it is essential for people to choose a conscious, sustainable operator in light of the recent exposure of the working conditions of the porters on the Inca trail.

Only 500 permits per day are granted for the long classic Inca trail that takes between four and five days to get to Machu Picchu. All permits must be distributed amongst tourists, and staff members who work on the Inca Trail assisting tourists.

In addition to these 500 permits, INRENA has increased to 300 permits the number of people who can hike the short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, which is a day hike that leads to Machu Picchu via the Sun Gate and parts of the long Inca Trail.

The sudden release of such permits is part of new changes to the way people and tour operators use the Inca trail implemented by INRENA for 2018. That information can be seen in one of their official sites here.

Permits for 2018 are being released four months earlier than previous years.

In the past people needed to wait until January 6, 2018, to obtain a permit which is no longer the case for 2018.

If you or anyone you know is thinking about hiking the Inca Trail in 2018, then you need to hurry and take the necessary steps to ensure you get a permit, especially when it comes to the most competitive months of the year such as May, June, and July. Earlier this year, permits for these months sold out in a matter of minutes.
