According to El Comercio,  a survey released by the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Perú, shows that public perception of public political entities continues to be extremely negative. The survey took place in Lima, and included 31 districts and over 500 participants.

Seventy-eight percent of those surveyed found Congress to be “somewhat to very corrupt,” which was followed by the Justice Department at 76%. Other entities perceived to be corrupt were political parties (75%), National Police (73%) and the Government (67%).

The survey continues with the theme of corruption; 64% indicated that they felt the Armed Forces were “somewhat to very corrupt,” 62% gave the same rating to the regional governments, and 41% believe that the media is corrupt.

Also, 85% of Lima’s residents rated the actions of the current government of Alan García to combat corruption to be “somewhat efficient or not at all efficient.” At the same time, 91% rate the legislative branch of government and 88% rate the Justice department as “not at all efficient” in their battle to combat corruption.

How sad! It appears that corruption is part of our everyday lives and therefore part of the Peruvian culture. Many say to me that I should be realistic and accept that corruption is part of life here.
