Plácido Domingo, the famous Spanish tenor, gave an
splendid show last night at the Monumental Stadium Esplanade.
Domingo sang the best of his repertoire, which included mostly opera and 'zarzuela,' to an audience estimated to be over 10,000 people. The audience was thrilled because the tenor also performed a Peruvian song; Chabuca Granda's “La Flor de la Canela.”
Plácido Domingo started with Le Cid, by Jules Massenet; L’ Arlesiana, by Francesco Cilea; Winterstürme wichen dem wonnemond, by Richard Wagner, and also a duet with Ana María Martínez, L’ Amico Fritz, by Pietro Mascagni, as well as more classical repertoire.
The second part was dedicated to Spanish popular genre “zarzuela,” a type of operetta, and Latino songs.
The tenor was accompanied by Peru's National Symphonic Orchestra, conducted by Eugene Kohn.
