Peru declares October 12th as "Day of the Native Peoples"

October 12th has been officially declared "Day of the Native Peoples and Intercultural Dialogue", according to a presidential decree published today in the state gazette, El Peruano.

The decree was approved last Wednesday by Congress and later ratified and issued by President Alan García.

This decree does not confer any festive nature to the date, and only orders the Education Ministry to develop, in coordination with regional governments and "representative organizations of indigenous peoples” the actions and activities that will be programmed.

Therefore, it is responsibility of the Education Ministry to coordinate and to program the events and activities to be carried out to commemorate that day.

Couldn't just call it Columbus Day like the rest of us, huh. . .after all, if it weren't for Columbus, the natives may still be running this country. . .

I'm neither a racist nor a fool, and I'm sorry you failed to see the irony in my post.

Many attribute the loss of native culture in the America's to Columbus, and yet he is celebrated.

What I do find racist is that Garcia declares one day for the "Native Peoples" while the other 364 continue to be for the ruling class.

Oh, and why October 12th?  Is there another significance to the day?

I think it is kind of a good idea!!!  However, I do not think it was Columbus' fault the destruction of our America or the New World.  It was the ambitious invaders the ones who destroyed, stole and killed thousands of innocent human beings.

Amor y Paz!!!
