Peruvian surfer Sofía Mulanovich placed
third in the first round of the Female World Championship at Portugal and has to go to a play-off for the next phase against Australian Alana Blanchard and French Pauline Ado.
Mulanovich got 8.03 points in her series, while Chelsea Hedges and Jessi Miley-Dyer, her occasional rivals, got 11.33 and 9.84 points, respectively.
Mulanovich could only run on Wednesday after the competitions were postponed twice due to bad weather at Peniche's beaches (Portugal).
Earlier in the competition, Australian Stephanie Gilmore, number one in the world, confirmed that she is a candidate to the world title after beating fellow countrywoman Amee Donohoe and the French surfer Ado.
