According to Transparency International’s 2009 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), released in Berlin this week, Peru has 3.7 points in a ranking that ranges between 0 (highly corrupt) and 10 (least corrupt). # Hugo here and I go dere says :

Venezuela no doubt deserves it's "most corrupt" ranking. I was there several months ago - at the invitation of the Venezuelan government - to show some technology. Aduanas at the airport tried to shake me down for US$4K. When I refused to pay, they lowered the price to $2K. When I again refused to pay a penny, they asked me how much cash will the ATM give me???? I paid nothing and left my equipment in the Customs office at the airport and picked it up 2 days later. A truly disgusting place. Gas costs .15 cents per gallon but the taxi costs $110 from the airport to Caracas. Chavez has artificially pegged the nuevo fuerte Bolivar at 2.1:1 to the dollar. It trades at 7:1 in the black market. A Happy Meal at McDonalds costs $19. Out of control.

I've heard similar stories from people who have visited or are from Venezuela. I'm surprised that Peru ranks higher than Argentina and lower than Columbia. Interesting...Add your comment
