Mining Company Antamina signed a new three-year labor agreement with its union workers, putting an end to four months of tense negotiations including the threat of a strike for the largest copper and zinc producers in the world.

The new agreement includes an raise in annual wages of between 4.4% and 4.7% and an extraordinary bonus of US $ 15,000 dollars for each worker.

Antamina, under the control of BHP Billiton Ltd, Xstrata Copper, Teck Cominco Ltd, and Mitsubishi Corp., confirmed the deal but refused to make any comments on the matter.

This agreement is one of the first ones made in an important mine in Peru since the international financial crisis started, and it is likely to be used as a reference for similar situations in another mining companies operating in the region.

Those bonuses are even less than the Chilean miners got to end a strike last month. Chilean miners also received up to $10,000 in soft loans on top of the bonus and pay increases..  Did somebody ask for a job application?  well, don't hurry.. South American miners receive much much less than their fellow miners in Australia or South Africa were the minimum salary package for a miner is not less than $100,000 a year and we are talking about miners not ingeniers, supervisors or managers...
