The Ubinas volcano had a second eruption yesterday prompting authorities to declare an orange alert and evacuate some 161 people. The explosion was followed by the formation of a large mushroom cloud.
The secretary of the local Civil Defense group Marcos Espejo, said that after the explosion there was new volcanic ash and other volcanic substances that would cause conjunctivitis and other respiratory problems.
Some 41 families (161 people in total) will be evacuated from their villages on the slope of the Ubinas volcano in vehicles provided by the Regional Government of Moquegua. The evacuation will not be easy as the terrain is difficult and there are no modern roads in the area.
For his part, President Alejandro Toledo affirmed that he is “monitoring very closely” the situation and added that the is evaluating a trip the the are to help direct the relief efforts.
