The Congressional Justice and Human Rights Commission unanimously approved in increase in the maximum sentence for kidnapping from 15 to 30 years. The old law established a prison term of between 10 to 15 years.
The president of the legislative group, Maruicio Mulder, stated that the group was following the wishes of the people, “that ask for better legislation and the decision of the commission was following this reality”. For his part the legislator Gilberto Díaz stated that judges should prioritize kidnapping cases because, when the process is delayed, the kidnappers are released from prison and kidnap again.
