Transport Costs May/May Not Increase

The three largest transport syndicates in Lima all expressed different opinions about the possibility of increased fares due to higher oil prices.

Omar Calderón, of Asetum, stated that there is “no other option” that we can use, and suggested an increase of 50% in the fares, which would bring many fares up to S/. 1.50. He added that with this increase the transport companies would be able to cover their operating costs.

Another representative, Jaime Delgado, president of the Peruvian Association of Users and Consumers (Aspec) called the proposal of Calderón “unjustifiable” and maybe “illegal” and that the bad service offered by the transport companies does not justify such an increase.

Leaders from other syndicates acknowledged that increase prices will not accomplish anything. José Luis Díaz, president of the Association of Urban Transport Companies of Peru, stated that they only way that they transport companies can reduce their costs is by forming consortiums and taking advantage of bulk purchasing.
