An overwhelming majority (93%) of the residents of Santiago, Chile (where former Peruvian President Alberto Fumimori is being held under house arrest) are in favor of extraditing the former president to Peru. Peru is seeking his extradition so he can be tried on charges of corruption and human rights violations.
The majority of those surveyed (54%) do not believe that Fujimori is a victim of political persecution. The survey also revealed that nearly 52% believe that Fujimori will return to Japan if the Chilean courts grant him freedom. Meanwhile 23% believe that he will return to Peru and 21% believe that Fujimori will make his home in Chile.
When asked if Fujimori was a friend of their country 77% responded that he was not and only 26% believe that he will become president of Peru at some point in the future.
