Morning News Roundup Lima Stock Exchange (BVL) Recap



(LIP-jl) -- Lima's stock exchange (Bolsa de Valores - BVL) maintained its incredible growth as it obtained its twelfth consecutive positive close on Tuesday afternoon.  Experts say the BVL's increasingly positive performance is due to Peru's emerging mining, industrial, and agricultural industries.  The BVL closed Tuesday's trading session at 18,944 points, an increase of 2.74% from yesterday's close. The Selective Index -ISEL (index that groups the 15 leading stocks), closed at 32.092 units, an increase of 3.35%. Some of yesterday's most active stocks included Quimpac (+11.8%), Minera Atacocha (+9.8%), Empresa Agraria Andahuasi (+8.9%), Grupo Gloria (-5%), Southern Peru (-4%), and Universal Textil (-3.6%).




Machu Picchu in 4th place in New 7 Wonders contest



(LIP-jl) -- With only 100 days left until we find out the results to the New 7 Wonders contest, officials from the New 7 Wonders foundation have informed that the Incan citadel of Machu Picchu is currently ranked in fourth place in the global internet voting contest. To date, the list is led by the archaeological site of Chichen Itza, in Mexico; followed by the Coliseum of Rome (Italy), The Great Wall of China (China), Macchu Picchu (Peru), Petra (Jordan), Giza’s Pyramids (Egypt), and the Taj Mahal palace (India).  To vote for Machu Picchu please visit the official New 7 Wonders website here (link).




Another earthquake shakes up Arequipa, Peru



(LIP-jl) -- According to Peru's Geophysical Institute (IGP in Spanish), an earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter Scale shook the southern Peruvian department of Arequipa.  The latest seismic movement occurred at 12:05 p.m. Tuesday and the quake's epicenter was registered 20 kilometers west of the town of Chuquibamba. This was the 40th earthquake registered in Peru so far this year.  IGP authorities informed that no damage, deaths, or injuries have been reported to them.



Prison shootout leaves 3 wounded in Lima, Peru



(LIP-jl) -- According to Peru's RPP Radio, 3 inmates from Miguel Castro Castro Maximum Security Prison were wounded yesterday after inmates from two different pavilions exchanged gunfire.  The wounded prisoners were taken to a nearby hospital.  Two inmates had minor gun shot wounds while the third inmate was listed in serious condition.   Prison officials are now investigating how inmates were able to smuggle the firearms past prison guards.



Heavy rain blocks entrance to national park in Cuzco



(LIP-jl) -- Heavy rains have pounded the area of Paucartambo (located in the department of Cuzco) for ten continuous days causing damage to the road that takes tourists into the Manu National Park. According to reports in the Peruvian media, some 400 tourists have been affected by the road closure. Officials from Peru's Civil Defense organization have reported two major problems on the roadway; one near the 97.5-kilometer marker and the other near the 142-kilometer marker. Authorities say that it is impossible to travel along the road until conditions improve.
