Peru's "Little Mermaid" baby doing well

(LIP-jl) -- Peru's "Little Mermaid" baby, who is about to turn 3 years old this week, walked around her nursery school yard last Friday, just seven months after undergoing an operation to fully separate her fused legs.

Milagros Cerron, whose first name means "miracles" in Spanish, was born with a rare congenital defect known as sirenomelia, or "mermaid syndrome," which left her legs connected from her heels to her groin.

Dr. Luis Rubio, chief of the medical team that successfully separated Milagros' legs, invited reporters to see her progress on Friday. He said doctors have successfully reconstructed the child's hips, knees and ankles and that she is "doing well physically."

However, Dr. Rubio indicated Milagros will need another operation in approximately two years to reconstruct and repair her urinary and sexual organs.

"We've gotten past the first stage, but it's not the last," Rubio said. "There's a long way to go."

Nonetheless, her progress is simply amazing and she now plays around with her classmates and even takes ballet lessons.

I just saw the documentary of the surgery on Discovery Health in Austin, Texas  on 7/3/2009 and I was so moved that I decided to check online. Now I am crying to see that sweet little girl walking. WALKING and taking BALLET LESSONS!

I have just emerged from this documentary on the Miracle baby of Peru on the eTV channel in South Africa.  It kind of illuminated the works of God.  Accordingly, I pray that whatever expertise is available should be dispatched to give this beautiful, sporty girl.  Humanity has been given a chance to define the mercy and sanity of the Creator.  The young couple parenting this child should be supported by all and sundry in their time of trial and tribulation in prayers and any other means to ensure Milagris Cerron realises a normal life.  Hail Peruvians for you positive attitude to Milagros as a miracle that may bring you good fortune in any facet of life.  God bless you.
