Bolivia's plan for maritime access puts Peru in hot water in Chile

(LIP-jl) -- A plan that calls for 'shared sovereignty' of the Peru-Chile border region between Peru, Bolivia, and Chile has caused a firestorm in Chile. Chile's news media has placed the blame on Peru alleging that supports the plan.

Peruvian Chancellor Jose Antonio Garcia Belaunde quickly denied that his agency, or any other Peruvian government agency, came up with the plan that would give Bolivia, one of two South American countries that is not bordered by an ocean , maritime access.

"The truth of the matter is that the Bolivian Ambassor in Lima speculated about various possibilities that would give his country maritime acccess," declared Belaunde to Chilean daily El Mercurio.

Garcia was forced to clarify his position on the matter after El Mercurio alleged that Peru would not have a problem with sharing the border region.

The article caused outrage in Chile and evoked a strong reaction from Chilean political figures.

Alberto Van Klaveren, the Sub-Secretary of Chile's Chancellor's Office, manifested that Chile has not contemplated any plan to share its territory near Arica and that the possibility of 'shared sovereignty' of Arica is 'unfounded speculation.'

I bet Paraguay would have something to say about Bolivia being the only country in South America without borders on an ocean.....

I understand the 'choppy' english - they are not using native english speakers on staff, but, yes, there have been mistakes like this that have nothing to do with language.

My spanish does allow me to read the news articles in spanish online, but it is more relaxing to read in my native lingo.

Tongue out

I only want to say that I love Peru.  Chile needs to STOP!  Their disgusting need for power is sad.  LEAVE PERU ALONE!!!!  Peru is a beautiful country and does not need other countries saying what Peru should or should not do or needs or does not need to do.  That is what the president (Alan Garcia) is there for.  Correct?

Peru functions great without the opinions of other countries.  Lo siento Bolivia!!!!!!!

Since Chile's war was one of conquering, aggression, and greed:

"The War of the Pacific grew out of a dispute between Chile and Bolivia over control of a part of the Atacama desert that lies between the 23rd and 26th parallels on the Pacific coast. The territory contained valuable mineral resources which were exploited by Chilean companies and British interests; a tax increase on these quickly escalated into a commercial dispute, diplomatic crisis and war."

Whose land is it...?

If chile could negotiate with bolivia in a resonable manner perhaps something could be done about the impending energy crisis they are about to face.

of course, we need to solve our own problems first.

I am interested in just what time in history war will end. ("Si somos Americanos, somos hermanos señores. Tenemos las mismas flores, tenemos las mismas manos." R. Alarcon) http://www.trovadores.net/ct.php?NM=31

Bolivia should be resolve its problem with Chile,

Peru should be neutral because for history, the peruvian goverment went in war with Chile for cause of BOLIVIA.

Remember "the war of the pacific" where Miguel Grau died to defend peruvian territory.

Maria

Thank you for your support. Your opinion is important. Eventually, everyone shall be at peace. Please don't worry. There are many very good people involved.

Back in in the 1800's Chile foreseeing a grim future, prepared to go to war, declared war on us and won. For them, in a way, it was a war of survival. They laid their eyes in rich Peruvian and Bolivian territory, got in debt, built up their military and navy and went for it.

They ransacked and destroyed our infrastructure. Chile pushed back our development 40-50 years while they prospered. Many years have gone by and now, finally, Peru is growing at a fast pace. They may be getting a little nervous about this. In 10 years from now, provided we keep on growing, we will be too difficult to deal with. Peru is like a 14 years old boy today in 10 years the balance of power will be in our favor. Time is on our side. Let's keep our heads cool, work hard without losing sight of what is our best course of action.

I have always wondered why do Chileans hate us so much. They won the war after all. We should be the ones hating them. They great majority Peruvians do not hate Chileans. It is has dawn on me, a few years back, that their “hate” feeling must be fear. They must fear that someday we will come back and take what it was taken from us, a very like scenario. We should play smart and avoid a conflict with Chile if all possible and buy more time. Our time will come.
There is something that puzzles me. I am talking about the case of the ‘Pisco, Suspiro Limeño and Inka Kola’. We all know about the case of the PISCO.  Was La Union, renamed PISCO ELQUI, in the 1930’s the beginning of a government plant to justify or to make theirs a stronger case to register el PISCO as a Chilean liquor? Regarding the case of the ‘Suspiro Limeño’, is it true that they have registered it as a Chilean product?. Finally regarding ‘Inka Kola’ is it true that a Chilean company has bought the brand?

Is there a Private Sector-Government-Military organism that plans this kind of things? I wonder is anybody knows about this. If so it would important to know it because that will raise awareness as to what is really going on. In the mean time let’s continue buying in Chilean stores and flying in LAN. Let’s not forget that in case of war LAN’s fleet will be put a the service of the Chilean air force to transport troops and the loot. They have already proven to be good looters in the previous war. To finish and regarding Chilean Pisco there is something I have to confess, I bought a bottle the other day and I hereby declare that it is good, a lot better than water for cleaning my glass before I drink a good Peruvian Pisco.
