Peru's Fujimori not eligible for Japanese election
Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori, currently under house arrest in Chilean capital Santiago, does not meet the requirements needed to stand in the Japanese elections on July 29, Wednesday's edition of the La Tercera daily said. Fujimori, who was president of Peru between 1990 and 2000, had received an offer some days ago from minority New Citizens Party, created by influential Japanese politician Shizuka Kamei, a dissident from the ruling Democratic Liberal Party. But according to Japanese law, candidates have to live in the electoral district they hope to represent for at least 35 days before the vote takes place. Fujimori's press office said on Wednesday that the former president was "considering the benefits of possible election as a Senator in Japan, for the people of Peru." Fujimori fled to Japan in 2000, when his government collapsed amid corruption scandals. The son of Japanese parents, he claimed Japanese citizenship on reaching there and the Japanese government ignored repeated extradition requests from Peru. He was arrested in Chile in November 2005 when he arrived unexpectedly from Japan, apparently to try to launch a political comeback in Peru. Fujimori is currently awaiting the outcome of a Peruvian extradition request against him in Chile. Senate. (Xinhua)



Peru names Copa America soccer squad
Peru's national soccer team coach Julio Uribe announced a list of 22 players who will represent the nation at the Copa America, which runs from next Tuesday until July 15 in Venezuela, the Peru Football Federation said on Wednesday. There are three goalkeepers on the list, five forwards and nine players who play for foreign leagues. The full list is as follows: Goalkeepers: Leao Butron, Juan Flores and George Forsyth. Defenders: Santiago Acasiete, Alberto Rodriguez, Walter Vilchez, Miguel Villalta, Edgar Villamarin, Jhoel Herrera and John Galliquio. Midfielders: Juan Vargas, Juan Bazalar, Paolo De la Haza. Juan Marino, Pedro Garcoa and Damian Ismodes. Forwards: Jefferson Farfan, Paolo Guerrero, Claudio Pizarro, Andres Mendoza , Roberto Jimenez and Israel Zuniga. Uribe leads a training team of six assistants and four physiotherapists. The Peru team will on Thursday travel to the Venezuelan city of Merida, to play in Group A facing Uruguay, Venezuela and Bolivia. (Xinhua)



Chinalco acquires 9.9% of PCR through private placement - Peru
The Aluminum Company of China (Chinalco) has acquired 9.9% of Vancouverite Peru Copper (TSX: PCR) by subscribing a private placement of 13.2mn common shares worth US$65.9mn, according to a PCR statement. The placement valued each share at Cdn$5.30. Chinalco and PCR announced on June 11 a friendly takeover agreement whereby Chinalco offered Cdn$840mn (US$792mn) or Cdn$6.60/share cash for the Canadian. The takeover bid and private placement are not dependent on one another. PCR's primary asset is the Toromocho project in Peru, set to churn out 270,000t/y of copper in concentrate and cathodes for 21 years. The Canadian's stock was trading at Cdn$6.47/share on the TSX Wednesday with no change from the previous close. (Business News Americas)
First gunfire victim in America found in Peru
The musket blast was sudden and deadly, the killing nearly 500 years ago of what may have been the first gunshot victim in the Western Hemisphere. ``We didn't expect it. We saw this skull and saw the almost round hole and thought people must have been shooting around here recently,'' said Guillermo Cock, an archaeologist who found the remains near Lima, Peru. But he realized that the skull was ancient, and a recent bullet strike would simply have shattered it, Cock said in a telephone interview. The skull was found among a large group of bones of ancient Incas, who had died violently in the early 1500s as the Spanish Conquistadors battled the native empire. The bones were in shallow graves, leading the archaeologist to speculate that the burials were done hurriedly during conflict, perhaps an uprising against the Spanish in 1536. To be sure this was a gunshot wound, the skull was studied by forensics expert Tim Palmbach at the University of New Haven, who brought in other experts. Al Harper, director of the Henry C. Lee Institute of Forensic Science in New Haven, Conn., said the team ``tried to rule out all kinds of causes of the hole - a rock from a slingshot, spear, sledgehammer.''
