Iraqi men detained at Peru's Jorge Chávez Airport

(LIP-ir) -- If a person's behavior, the person, or what they are carrying is suspicious - you can rest assured that they will be detained at Jorge Chávez Airport in Lima, Peru.

That was the case last night when 3 Iraqi citizens were detained after having been caught with fake passports.

According to officers on duty, police responded quickly and detained the individuals, who came to Peru from Brazil, when they attempted to enter the country using fake passports.

The men were immediately taken from the airport to the Crime Investigation Directorate (Dirincri) in Callao for questioning.

According to RPP Radio, Vice-President of the Arab Community in Peru, Yasin Kahuv has said that the men have Lebanese family and profess to be of the Chaldean Church, a Christian group in Iraq.

He added that the men might have purchased the fake passports in Lebanon and that their final destination was not Lima, Peru but Los Angeles, California in the United States.

The Arab Community Vice-President explained that the men had not left their country to commit crimes elsewhere but had left in an attempt to escape the war that is plaguing the Middle-East.

These people just wanted to look for a better future in the United States and are now considering the possibility of seeking asylum and staying here in Peru was among Yasin Kahuv's final statements.
