Cameron has offended Peru

Cameron Diaz's olive green messenger bag has caused an uproar among international newspapers and journalists. Currently there are over 100 articles about how Cameron Diaz has "offended the nation of Peru."

Diaz has been received by Cusco's community with interest and excitement. She has taken part in several sacred rituals, such as the Pachamama - a ritual that honors Mother Earth, and has been invited to take part in the Inti Raymi festival where Cusco's Mayoress, Marina Sequeiros plans to dub Cameron a "guest of honor."

While it is reported that Peruvian human rights activist, Pablo Rojas made a statement with respect to Cameron's choice of accessories, here in Peru it doesn't seem she has offended the nation.

Yes, there may well be international articles about this "offense" yet actually LIVING here in Peru, I have asked about a dozen relatively well-read Peruvians (not a statstical sample I realize), if they:

"have felt personally offended by Cameron Diaz' handbag, read or heard ANYTHING about Ms. Diaz offending Peruvians, or have heard anything at all about her handbag."

So far the answer has been a resounding "Huhh?" quickly followed by comments of how wonderful it has been to share Peru's cultural (and gastronomic) bounty with someone so well known, and how their only regret (in typical Peruvian style) about her visit was to not have had the opportunity to welcome her back to Peru personally.

To quote that "other" 16th century author:  "Much Ado about NOTHING"

To bad some parts of the foreign press seem to be missing the point of the local press:  "Come on down, we are glad to have you!!!"

Isn't it amazing how people can go ballistic over swastikas--even though National Socialism was taken care of over a half-century ago and in most of the world it's the smybol of Buddhism (that's why New Ager Hitler sought to replace the Cross of christ with it)--but commie-chic is okay, even though both Stalin and Mao killed at least ten times as many innocents as Adolf?

I have decided to leave this comment only because in todays state of peru, while needing and depending on visitors from other countries to help support its lower economic statue- WHY IN THE HELL WOULD PERU prejustce a DESIGNER HAND BAG-  I mean; come on already; with DIAZ in peru, this will only bring more attention to this great country of peru and now the people in peru want to destroy the image.  Your making me feel i should only wear ALPACA for example.... come on,... please... this seems to be the peoples problem, not DIAZ,  Where do we draw a line on obsesivesness??  OK, I cant spell, are the people in peru going to not welcome me here because I can not spell 90% of the cities here.....  The peruvian people need to apperciate outside visitors.  I understand the shinning path was a disaster to lima, however,,,,  the peruvian people should know this is a cleb with designer clothing and ment no harm.  How the hell can the peruvian people say that she offeded them....  People that publish **** like this should be hit in the head...  I guess in todays world, we all need some contraversy or our day to day life or everything would be booring...  I cant believe the people here made such an isssue out of this...  i know from other friends and family iin USA that this story has just put some doubt in the minds of many about visitiing this country.  We shoudl concentrate on giving children education here and health hospitals to vist.  not to worry about DIAZ hand bag....  I am soo pissed about this.... have a great day!!  I am Very dissapointed in the peruvian ways for the first time in 3 years now that I am here.

I agree with Trevor. Most Peruvians haven't even heard about tha bag. I think some tabloid got a hold of some pictures of her, noticed the bag and made up a whole story about it. Like the previous statement says, its just because some people need contoversy. If we look at any Peruvian newspaper there is nothing about Cameron having upset the nation at all. I don't think Peruvians are offended and I don't think the articles written represent the way Peruvian people think at all. Its too bad that a story like this has gotten so spread around the world.

Only people outside the country are making a fuzz about. Most of many peruvians residing in Peru don't even have a clue about the so called offense.
