(LIP-ir) -- Peru's Minister of Economy during Fujimori's term as president of Peru (1990-2000), Jorge Baca Campodónico, facing corruption charges, is to be extradited from Argentina to Peru today .

"It is hoped that there won't be any problems and that he arrives tomorrow (Thursday) night as planned," stated Peru's Chief of the International Judicial Cooperation and Extradition, Secilia Hinojosa.

In comments to local press, Hinojosa stated that the repatriation, which is to be handled by Peru's International Police (INTERPOL), of the former minister is the result of a cooperative effort between Peru and Argentina.

Baca Campodónico is being charged with corruption, embezzlement of funds, "false ideology" as an offense to the state, when he favored friends of Fujimori in the payment of taxes, among other charges.

At the time Baca Campodónico was detained in Buenos Aires in February 2003, he was working for the International Monetary Fund, thus claiming diplomatic immunity to the charges presented in Peru. He will now be extradited following the Argentinean Supreme Court’s recent decision to reject honoring his diplomatic immunity.

Peru's Justice system considers Baca Campodónico to have been involved in a network of corruption headed by Vladimiro Montesinos, who is currently serving a 20-year prison term at the top-security naval prison in the port of Callao.
