Former Minister Detained and Extradited



(LIP-ir) -- Peru's former Minister of Economy, Jorge Baca Campodónico, arrived to Lima, Peru last night from Argentina. He was extradited from the country after Peru placed an order for his arrest and extradition in 2003. Baca Campodónico, minister during Fujimori's administration, is suspected of having been involved in a network of corruption headed by Vladimiro Montesinos.

Apra Keeps Control



Peruvian president Alan García’s Apra party has retained control of Congress for a second year, after it elected former foreign minister Luis Gonzales Posada – a member of Apra – to serve as chamber president. Retaining control of the legislature is seen as crucial in García’s ability to shrug off pressure from opposition parties going into his second year in charge. (Latin Finance)



New Fountain in Peru Sets Guinness Record



In an impressive light and water show, mixed with music and images, Lima, Peru's new Magical Water Tour was inaugurated last night at Lima's Parque de la Reserva. Lima's Mayor Luis Castañeda accompanied by Peru's President, Alan Garcia held the ceremony which has opened the park to the public. It was revealed that the park has already been recognized by Guinness Records as the public park with the largest fountain complex in the world. The park is a route of 13 fountains, one of which has a water display that shoots water 80 meters into the sky.



Seven Wonders of Peru



According to a survey done by the University of Lima Public Opinion Group, Machu Picchu is at the top of the "Seven Wonders of Peru" list with a 93 percent response in surveys held. It is followed by Nasca's Lines (59.1), the new Huascarán (54.5), Lake Tititaca (44), the Señor de Sipán (42.9), the Manu Park (39.9) and Paracas Reserve (38.9). Surveys were given, on the 26 and 27 of May, to 497 randomly-chosen citizens in Lima's 32 districts and Callao. People surveyed were given the option of choosing among 21 of Peru's most beautiful and historic sights.
