Peru's Alan Garcia to Enforce Stricter Measures on Bus Companies

(LIP-ir) -- Peru's President Alan Garcia, stated in a speech today that he would request that the owners of transportation companies that caused deadly accidents, such as the ones in Ica and Arequipa, serve longer prison sentences.

"The owner of a transport company that knowingly does not take the necessary precautions and safety measures is putting his passengers lives in danger and should therefore answer to the law," stated Peru's President.

The President stated that if it were necessary, transport companies would be directly penalized and vehicles that do no comply with established regulations would be confiscated by Peru's government.

Although Garcia stated that the new transport plan presented by the Ministry of Transportation needed to be reviewed before its approval, he stated he completely agreed that the "criminal companies" responsible for the accidents should be considered delinquents.

He lamented that wherever there was room to break the law in Peru, people do it and that the best solution was the "rod and punishment."

Peru's President emphatically stated, "Then we will see if buses are left in bad conditions, if companies will try to evade control measures or hire irresponsible drivers with no experience."

The bus company in Arequipa was closed down several years ago and told never to start again. So all this time they have been operating. I love my country, but this is another case of money talks, & these poor people are dead as a result. These people should be taken too prison too rot, and the key to their jail door lost.

I really really hope Garcia or one of his cohorts puts action behind their words this time because the transport situation is really unacceptable now.
