(LIP-ir) -- A strong tremor, with characteristics of an earthquake shook up Lima and other regions in Peru for 2 minutes straight, causing panic among citizens which darted out of homes and businesses. # Carol says :

Luckily the movement came over such a long period. The same force over 30 seconds would have been disasterous.

My Peruvian wife is there, she is stuck there because of dishonest people, and because of ridiculous immigration laws. We have 30 million illegals here and we have not been able to get her here legally as of this time. She called me, hysterical, and halfway through the call, the call dropped. I have not been able to call back, or even send a text message. How's THAT for tying to do things the "proper" way??? She said "everything is destroyed, there is glass everywhere, and people are crazy". She also could not locate her 16year old daughter, who was riding the public transportation when the temblor hit. Anybody have suggestions for me? As to how to get her here - legally or otherwise (trying to do it the legal way got us absolutely NOWHERE). ACLU, where are you???

Can anyone report on the current status of Machu Picchu and Sacsaywaman? I understand that scientist reported that an earthquake this size could destroy Machu Picchu due to landslides. 2 minutes at Richter 7.5 - my God!
# Scott says :
15 August, 2007 [ 20:07 ]
Not seeing any real damage here in Lima, just some broken glass. Just had a small aftershock. People seem panicked but at least speaking for the Miraflores area things don't look very bad, we didn't even lose power.
# Jed says :
15 August, 2007 [ 20:09 ]
I believe Machu Picchu is fine. It wasn't that strong here in this area and it wasn't a full 2 minutes... 2 or 3 bursts over that time. Enough to be serious up near Lima but not so much here.

Lee Jones - Contact the American Red Cross to have them help you make contact with her. There are Amatuer Radio (HAM Radio) operators that they deal with here in USA and even in Peru that can get a message through. They also use the MARS Network from the US Military.
Regarding immigration. If you have a computer go to http://www.uscis.gov and do some serious research on this matter. Being that you are an American and you two are legally married in US eyes, and were legally living together before her deporatation - this should have had some bearing on her staying. You might also find a person or company that's willing to support her via a work visa. She could stay for awhile that way but would eventually have to go back. Work on going through with citizenship application. I know its a major hassle but as long as she has a clean criminal record in Peru and with InterPol and is not on any watch lists she should be able to make some progress.
If she has access to a Internet computer that she is allowed to download software too (not the library or Internet Cafe) she could go to http://www.skype.com and you two could make PC to PC calls. With Skype you can make International calls to regular phones too. However, if the earthquake has taken out the fiber optic lines in Peru (QWEST) for the Internet then there's not much use in doing Skype.
Red Cross can find her and help you make contact with her. Go to you local ARC office. They can get people in Peru to look for her and get a status on everyone in your family there. Here's their website: http://www.redcross.org/

# Chris says :
15 August, 2007 [ 20:29 ]
Lee Jones - it just occured to me (duh!) that the people here are in Peru! So the Internet lines are NOT down there. Also maybe some of these nice people might be able to look her up for you and get a message through? I don't recommend giving out her cell phone number here. Try and get an email conversation with one of these Peruvian folks. Using AOL IM or other IM is more private. Maybe she can get on a Internet Cafe computer and get a free Yahoo.cm account and you two can communicate that way. She would have to check her messages on a routine daily schedule like every half a day at noon and 6PM or something.
Try investing into a sattellite phone for her for better coms with her. They run just under $1,000 and <$2.00 a minute. Well worth the price for emergency coms in spotty areas like ocean, mountains, deserts, and jungles. Or you two can get Ham radios, antennas, and licenses.

Steph, San Isidro is powered, people seam fine. Only areas in Lima to be worried about are the centre, Barranco, Rimac and Callao (old houses), and La Punta being evactuated as a precaution (Tsunami).

Chris, thanks much for your suggestions. She wasn't deported, she hasn't been able to leave. We did EVERYTHING the "Legal" way. Well, not the place to discuss this. Condensed version - thieving Peruvial lawyer who volunteered his "services" - you can likely figure out the rest.
I'm sure that when the communication lines calm down, I'll be able to contact her, right now everybody is in a panic. My worry now is the possible tsunami - she lives less than a half a mile from the beach.
# Lee Jones says :
15 August, 2007 [ 20:53 ]
Peruvial??? I meant Peruvian, sorry.
# Stuart says :
15 August, 2007 [ 20:55 ]
Lee Jones, where does she live? Less than half of the city's coast is vulnerable to Tsunamis. La Punta Callao is being evacuated as a precaution, but its quite unlikely that anything will happen.
# Lee Jones says :
15 August, 2007 [ 20:58 ]
Hi Stuart,
She lives in Chorillos - it's about 5 miles south of downtown Lima. I saw a story somewhere just a few minutes ago that said there were tsunami warnings, but didn't say exactly what areas.
# Stuart says :
15 August, 2007 [ 21:02 ]
Chorrillos is mostly without power, but phones are working. Chorrillos has low laying areas, so not sure what the Tsunami risk is. La Punta, Callao is very very low-laying is apparently is always evacuated as a precaution. So far there seems to be no real worry of a Tsunami.
# Kristen says :
15 August, 2007 [ 21:03 ]
How far is Arequipa from the epicenter? I have a friend that is there staying with a host family. She doesn't speak the language, and I am concerned that there is severe damage to that area. Can anyone give me an update??
# Stuart says :
15 August, 2007 [ 21:06 ]
Kristen,
Arequipa is further than Lima. The force seems to be been felt most towards the north, as far away as Colombia they are saying. All of Ecuador and northern Peru are reported to have felt in.
No reports of problems in Arequipa yet.

# Lee Jones says :
15 August, 2007 [ 21:08 ]
Ok, but just last year, that big tsunami that killed thousands in Thailand? They didn't get the warning. Peru is a third world country where they totally don't have their stuff together. My worry is that they will not get a warning out if there actually IS a tsunami. Chorillos is a very low lying area.

Spoke briefly with Mother in law in Callao, she is leaving as soon as possible... lots of panic is what it sounds like. The phone call was made a few minutes ago, and then cut in the middle of the call.My sister in law was getting into a taxi, right at the time of the first quake, and narrowly missed some large metal pieces of a building miss her. Sounds like the pieces were not big enough to kill, but cause serious damage.Best to keep all peruvian people in the Lima/quake area in our prayers!

From Fox News:A tsunami warning was issued for South America's Pacific coast based on the strength of the quake.
The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued "an expanding regional tsunami warning and watch for parts of the Pacific located closer to the earthquake," as well as a tsunami advisory for the Hawaii.
The center said it did not know if a tsunami had been generated.
The center said, however, that a wave impact of undetermined strength was expected to hit Hawaii at about 2:14 a.m local time, or 8:14 a.m. EST.
The center also issued a tsunami warning for South America's central Pacific coast, based on the strength of the quake, the Associated Press reported.

Stuart - I see by USGS stats that only 2 people in Cusco reported into them and they characterized it as "moderate" as I guess it was unusual for them. It appears that Chincha Alta and Ica Peru was closest to epicenter as it was only 25 miles west out in the ocean? Is that correct? Wasn't there a 2nd and 3rd Richter 5.9 1 and 2-hours later?
Here is the coordinates of the epicenter of the 7.9: 13.322°S x 76.508°W

I was told by a public affairs officer that the USNS Hospital Ship Comfort which just left Peru days ago is in Equador and is standing by for a possible return to Peru to provide medical aid. In addition JTF Bravo located in Honduras is also standing by. I was told that the only thing keeping this aid from coming to Peru is a formal request for these services. Please someone in the Peruvian government request this aid. It is there just waiting. The U.S. does not want to coming charging into your country without a request. Just request it.

My son and his friends have been climbing Machu Picchu since Tuesday, so no word available from him. He will hopefully be able to get back to Cusco today. Does anyone have updated info on problems in Machu Picchu or Cusco? Thank you....

It seems that in Callao 3 are confirmed dead. A newborn baby, a person who wasn't able to be provided with oxygen due to power problems and and older person who died of a heart attack.

Need to fly AirCan to Lima tomorrow. So far they haven't cancelled. Need to fly Lima to Cusco via LanChille on Sunday. Reached my Lima arrival hostel by phone. Said everything calm in Lima and flights running fine. Not sure if I can trust them? Might want to discourage people from cancelling? Also difficult to make judgements by seeing the news reports. They tend to focus on the sensational when everything might be fine one block over. Anyone have good information about dom. and int'l flights?

That should be LanPeru not LanChille

pursuant to many newspapers, everything is running normally regarding both domestic and international flights, dont worry, however a tv channel has reported that Jorge Chavez international airport has been lightly affected by the quake

The city of Arequipa has felt the earthquake but with no serious consequences, nothing to worry about, authorities have reported that there were no emergency situations, best regards

My sister was supposed to be flying into Lima last night, but I don't know what airline she was with, just that she went through LA. Does anyone know if they diverted international flights yesterday, and if so, when did they start? Thanks.

I need a favor from anyone living in Peru and able to access this toll free number. This is the number given by El Comercio that has a list of those who have parished in the earthquake: 0-800-10828. I am desperately looking for my uncle, Padre Alfonso Berrade, who is a priest living in Pisco. Please, someone, please let me know if he is on that list. Bless you all going thru this terrible time!

Our people got out of Iquitos fine, arrive in Lima at 11pm tonight. They have many digital photographs. Any place they can go at that hour to upload the pictures to us? We will post at www.know.org/amazon. Anyone know of an all-night Internet Cafe in Lima or someplace at the airport? Thanks. ASB/NLL

HA! A prison in Ica had one of the walls come down, and 600 prisoners escaped. Now THAT is funny. Funny only because there are so MANY thieves roaming the streets anyway. 600 more ain't gonna make any difference in THAT city.
