Peru Earthquake Relief - Can you Help?

Peru is a country we all know and love. A country which has given us uncountable memories and treasures. The time has come to give back to this country.

Many of you have already shown tremendous acts of kindness and brotherhood. Unfortunately there are still thousands of people waiting for help.

As you have see all over the news, the earthquake on Wednesday has severely crippled the Region of Ica. Thousands of people need aid immediately. Thousands have been left without homes and are currently sleeping in the streets. Problems such as a lack of food and water have worsened the situation.

Peru's President Alan Garcia summed it up when he stated that Lima had been blessed and spared. We are in a position to help. Everything is needed; from cots to shovels, from wheelbarrows to water, from blood to blankets. What can we do?

Here is a list of ways and places where we can help:

Countries all over the world are making it possible for people across the globe to help

Concerned Citizens

Most of the Ica Region has been destroyed. The Province of Pisco, within the Ica Region, has been the focus of most media and most of the aid. Chincha, another Province within the Ica Region, has not been the focus of much attention. The need in Chincha is just as great as in Pisco.

A group of benevolent and concerned citizens has organized a help mission to El Carmen, a devastated town in the Chincha Province which has been overlooked by the media. A large truck will shortly be leaving Lima for El Carmen, taking with it everything donated by us.

If you are ready to take action, contact the Mission Organizers:

  • Jose Miguel Devéscovi Nextel 831*4670
  • Mariana Cilloniz 441-1327

Building Houses - Don't wait for someone else to lend a hand

A group of young volunteers, UN TECHO PARA MI PAIS - PERU, in coopertion with INDECI has traveled to Pisco today to begin the construction of 100 emergenncy houses. 800 registered volunteers are planning to go- they will need help to cover transportation costs and other expenses. For any cooperation contact them at:

UN TECHO PARA MI PAIS, click here

Arona

The workers quarters of the colonial Hacienda Arona, standing since the 1550s, has been completely destroyed. The Hacienda Arona, located on the Pacific Coast of Peru in Cañete, was not only the home of many, but an extraordinary historical and touristic site. Now in ruins, all that is left, are workers that do not have shelter or food. Its stranded inhabitants are sure government aid will not reach them any time soon. They have besought any kind of non-perishable food as well as candles, flashlights and whatever can be spared.

Donations can be taken to:
Isabel Alayza
  • Coronel Portillo 102 (First floor) San Isidro
Marielena Alayza
  • Calle Crepi 250 San Borja
Behind the Interbank on the 28th block of Aviación Av.

Private Companies Helping in the United States - We can join them

If you are in the US and would like to use a credit card or PayPal to make a donation, Peruviana Group, LLC is taking them on their web site. This way, you won't need to mail a check or pay any wire tranfer fees.

This is a very good group of people that were planning on going to Peru next week and are now going to help the affected region.

Your donations will go directly to buy food, supplies and medicine. This is not a charity group, so no tax deductions, but there is virtually no overhead; every dollar you donate will be spent helping people who desperately need it.

I spoke to Admiral Jorge Moscoso, Naval Attache at the Peruvian Embassy in Washington D.C. USA, he told me that a special request had been sent to to the U.S. Southern Command Center in Florida in regards to sending the USNS Hospital ship Comfort, standing by in Ecuador, back to Peru to give medical aid to the devastated areas south of Lima. Any follow-up at the American Embassy in Lima will be appreciated.
All Peruvian associations here in the Midwest area are currently working to send all help to the area!

Un Techo para Mi Pais accepts donations through Western Union (Un Techo para Mi Pais, Peru) and also through their central website www.untechoparamipais.org, payable through paypal.  Construction of emergency homes begins this week and will continue until completion of a minimum of 100 homes, perhaps more depending on donations recieved.
Best Regards.

For those that live in USA,you can make your donations to the Salvation Army at your local town. THe Salvation Army also have a Chapter in Peru.  The SAlvation Army is a very old organization and it can be trusted.  All donations are tax deductible. Call or check the internet for their local address or phone. Make sure you ask for Disaster Release and be specific on your donation, like donation for Peru earthquake/tsunami on your check or credit card donations.

For those who live in florida, you can go to the web. www.consuladoperu.com
and then press: noticias del sismo.
and you are gonna find different places to donate items People are helping THANK GOD.
Today I went to the one in miami.

that is located in : 7050 N.W 51ST MIAMI FLORIDA 33166.
F.A.P (AIR FORCE FROM PERU)and the people that are helping there are running short of hands, meaning they need extra help to organize all donations so if you are available and want to help I suggest to spend a couple of hours organazing all clothing by gender.WE NEED THE HELP!
Also I was told by the helpers that they are two full hangars with clothing and now they need medicine all kinds:

aspirin,ibuprofen,cotton,gauze,diapers for children and adults,wheelchairs,alcohol,peroxide,tents,sleeping bags,flashligths,batteries,shovels etc.

It brings tears to my eyes washing all the bad news and pain on tv about our beautiful country .So lets turn this tears into joy by helping then rebuild the hole city and bring back those wonderful times of dancing (FESTEJO AND DRINKING PISCO IN HONOR TO OUR CITY)

GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU,AND LETS UNITED OUR HEARTS AND PRAYERS.

Deedee. I too have friends in Huaraz. I just heard that they were at altitude when the quake struck, but they did not feel it. They are safe and because of the distance from the epicenter no casualties have been reported there. Chances are they may not even know about it if they are somewhere remote.

Hello! This is PERUVIANA getting ready to leave this Friday for Peru! We are full of energy and adrenaline, and bringing our relief money as well as many other items bought her (too expensive to buy in Peru). We will account for EVERY dollar returning receipts to all our gift donors (we will pay credit card fees, postage, and any tax, as we are NOT a non-profit organization).

All the USA people, continue reading in the internet the news about Peru (i.e. yahoo news) but click, click, please on the Peru earthquake news! Peru's news have been pushed to the back, we need them again to be front-page news.

Hi. I have a friend in desperate need in Pisco. I am thinking it is better for me to wire him money for him the buy the things he needs there - but I am wondering about whether to send things he needs by post from England - anyone know if post is getting through to Pisco? Is it secure? or is it likely others in equal need may take the things I have sent for him and his family?

Or does anyone know know of any aid agencies that will recieve and pass on goods to specific people?

Thanks

I just spoke to some relatives in Ica/Pisco Peru. help is not getting here fast enough. People need water, food, clothes, shoes, socks, blankets, and not to mention shelter some old people that couldn't walk far enough stay behind and have built shelter withe the debris. If you can sent directly to the family is the best, there is no order in distributing the supply if the supply is distribute it is for a few only after people waiting in line for hours. We have sent  money to them directly but the people that has no family abroad are dying from luck of help. The fisherman can not work because their boats are destroyed and they are not allow to go back not even to repair them, besides he ocean is in not condition to fish. The water is muddy and the earth still tremble. While I was talking to my niece there was a 6 point quake and some of the standing walls come down. There are still digging for death people.  Please help in any way you can.

Amituofo

You can check with the local Peruvian embassy in Illinois or donate it to the local Salvation Army and tell them it is for Peru victims of the earthquake?tsunami.

I also had heard the shipping cost more than the value of goods. You can also check with airlines that go to Lima Peru.  I heard that some airlines are taking packages to Peru without charge. It won't hurt to ask.

Also do a google search on Peru news.

God bless you

Asociacion de Caridades San Vicente works directly with Fr. Alfonso Berrade, whose church in Pisco (San Clemente) was destroyed and parishioners perished while at Mass. Volunteers from this Association are receiving donations and trucking tons of food, blankets, toilet paper, diapers, etc. every week. If you wish to donate directly to their account, it is #194-15667907-1-67 in Banco de Credito, Sucursal de Miraflores. Feel free to contact them through the Parroquia Virgen Milagrosa, #444-2212. I can guarantee help will reach people in need, with no administrative costs involved. They're doing a wonderful job. Please help them. If anyone wants more information, let me know.

Innocent    I have been hearing LOTS and LOTS of rumors that all of the stuff us Americans are sending to Peru are NOT getting to the people in Ica/Pisco.

The bags of clothes and medicines and cosmetics and the like are either being stored away in some type of warehouse or are being rifled through by unscrupulous individuals and they are actually taking what they like for themselves!

Who is regulating the distribution of clothing and the like in these area's?

Is there a relief station set up and people come and pick up what they need? Is there anyone making sure no one is double dipping or that the people taking stuff are not from a area not hit by the earthquake?

There are so many rumors on the Internet and amongst people in the Peruvian community where I live that everyone is getting scared to send anything to Ica/Pisco. They believe the wrong people are getting the stuff they sent or that it is not getting to the victims at all.

The people here in Bridgeport are NOT rich at all and are scraping the bottom of the barrel to give and give some more.

Their hearts are full of love and they are so happy to share what they have with their fellow Peruvians.

I am married to a Peruvian and love the country and all it stands for.

Peru is absolutely breathtaking and amazing. The people and their different cultures is what makes Peru the best country in South America. So many different things make up Peru it is so diverse. Like I said Peru is breathtakingly beautiful!

All of our prayers are with you and your families.

Bless you all.

Especially clothing, blankets, sleeping bags, tents, bottled water, shampoo, bars of soap, baby diapers, formula, dried pet food, bandages, rubbing alcohol, Ibruprofen, Etc.

Please spare what you can. Remember it is WINTER in Peru right now and people are sleeping on cots outside with thin sheets covering them. It is a desperate situation these people are in. They need our help and prayers. Send your love to Peru today...  [[[ ---  YYY

Frances, It breaks my heart to see your note.  And you're right.  These things do happen.  I lived in Peru over 30 years, through several awful earthquakes, and have seen what occurs at times like these, which is why I'm working directly with the organization which I've been assisting and supporting since 1997, Asociacion de Caridades San Vicente, in Miraflores.  There are government warehouses where donations received from organized charities must deposit the aid.  But distribution is not so well organized--due to crisis conditions and, yes, some level of corruption which happens everywhere--let's remember Katrina.  I could tell you a lot more but hesitate to put more on this site at this time.  All one can say at this point is that our giving must be in good faith and trust, and hope that those who are needy do receive it.  But I would also like to refer you to www.famvin.org/en, a website of the International Vincentian Family, for more information on how you or anyone you know might donate directly to Asociacion de Caridades San Vicente.  Their volunteers (Vicentinas) are taking ALL donations to Pisco personally and delivering to the Sisters of Charity for families affected.  We've found free transportation.  No extra costs going anywhere.  Please don't lose faith. Take care--and visit the website's several entries and comments and reports on this subject.

To all my Peruvians Brothers and Sisters let us put aside our differences for a moment; our country has been devastated by an unforgivable natural disaster. It is time we came together to help those who has lost everything and whose suffering is more than most could bear. Begin a new day by sharing and feel that you have done something right today, just by donating al least one dollar...Just one Dollar....(see above  information on how to send donations)
