(LIP-ir) -- The magnitude-8 earthquake which devastated Peru on Wednesday August 15, not only crippled the Region of Ica, but has also taken its toll on Lima Region and City.
In Lima, 19 people have died, 195 have been hurt and 1,597 families have also been victims of the earthquake.
According to specialists, Peru's capital, with a population of 8 million, was spared from a greater catastrophe due to the fact that the earthquake produced a vertical motion.
Lima has not been struck with such an earthquake in 37 years.
Peru's Civil Defense has reported that in the Region of Lima, including the capital, 2,786 families have been affected.
In the metropolitan area; a man died when a wall fell on him, two people had fatal heart attacks, a baby in an incubator and a patient in a hospital on a respiratory aid device died when power was lost.
Cañete Province was one of Lima Region's worst hit areas. In Cañete, which is near Pisco and borders the Ica Region, 6 people died, 172 were wounded and 1,398 families have lost their homes.
One person has died in the Province of Huarochirí, another in Yauyos while 11 people have died in the Provinces of Lima and Callao.
Peru's government suspended school classes when 132 of the capital's schools were found to have been affected by the earthquake. According to the Regional Education Directorate, schools which have been affected most are in the districts of Breña, Comas, San Juan de Lurigancho, Ate Vitarte, San Borja and Rímac.
