United Nations to Donate US$10 Million to Peru's Earthquake Victims


(LIP-ir) -- In a meeting to coordinate relief efforts for Peru, it was announced that the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), is to donate US$10 million for the purchase of products which are to aid the victims of the devastating 8-magnitude earthquake that hit Peru on August 15.

Executive Director of the Peruvian Agency for International Cooperation (APCI), Agustín Haya de la Torre, announced that the United Nations Development Program is capable of donating 10 million dollars (7.4 million euros) for the purchase of food, housing units, tents and other basic necessity products.

During a meeting, representatives from different sectors presented a list of the different necessities the affected regions presently have.

Peru's Vice-Minister of Housing, Juan Sarmiento, reported that pre-fabricated homes, latrines, satellite telephones, 15,000 liter reservoirs, tents and other material were needed.

The Vice-Minister of Health, José Calderón, stated that it was necessary to organize brigades which could medically aid, people in rural areas.

Several lists were presented by several of Peru's sectors.

Representatives from the European Commission, the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation (AECI), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) were also present at the meeting.
